All my notes have vanished

Just updated from Lion to Mountain Lion. All of my notes, across 4 different email accounts, have completely vanished. The Notes app shows the 4 accounts, but all are empty. To make matters curioser, when I go to the accounts section is System Preferences, it does not show the 4 accounts (although they are there in Mail!)

I don't use iCloud to sync notes as that caused massive problems with duplicates when I first activated it back when iOS5 was released.

HELP!

Thanks

same here! had two e-mail-accounts with notes, accounts are set up in the new notes app, butt all notes are missing. i tried to disable and re-enable nites in the accounts system preferences without luck - actually i can't disable notes in the system preferences pane: when i click on the checkmark it disappears and immediately reappears.... IS THIS A BUG?

so the notes are still there on my ipad and iphone - but not in the new notes app in 10.8 although the accounts are setup and the notes app is showing them...

First my beloved To Do in Lion, which I immediately used Notes to fill in. Now in Mtn Lion Notes via email are history. Straight from Jesus to God, are you really trying to kill me Apple!

They now reside in an app called Notes and no longer link to email. I am so frustrated I can't see straight. Why does everything have to be a separate app. Why not keep it together so you don't have to hunt and search another app. WHATEVER HAPPENED TO PRODUCTIVITY FLOW!

Taking my soapbox and leaving...

at the very least, notes on 10.8 should link to your notes in your email-accounts just as notes for ios does... THIS IS A BUG!!!

apart from i agree with you - formerly i had two apps open all the time - mail and ical. now i have four: mail, calendar, notes & reminders. even my 27" imac screen is cluttered cluttered cluttered.... i can't see all those beautiful new wallpapers!

I have the same problem as well. Under Lion I used a dreamhost IMAP account to sync Notes between my iPhone, iPad and Macs. First system I upgraded to Lion, all my notes disappeared (though I can still find them in the hidden Library folder as an mbox) and no syncing occurs. If I try to create a folder in Notes under my imap account it freaks out and placed the folder under "On My Mac" under "Recovered Items". Frustrating.

Hi,

Although not all of my notes have vanished, I know at least one of them has. It was one I created shortly before upgrading to ML so I distinctly remember it. The problem is, if that one has disappeared, I'm not sure what other ones have also gone that I might not remember!

Oh, and I'm running Lion Server which hosts the mail accounts under which the notes were being saved.

I have the same problem.

Notes in ML do not sync with the IMAP server.

On my iPhone4s ios5 works perfectly. I have also checked my email account through the browser to see if the notes are effetively synced from my iPhone to the mail server.... works. Now with ML there must be a bug....

I create a note with mountain lion in my email account and it does not sync up to the mail server... notes that exist on the mail server do not show up on ML, but they do on ios5.

Re add those accounts and make sure Notes is checked for each of them when you are in the Mail, Contacts, & Calendars section.

This should get your Notes back for you.

Oh dear. That didn't work very well. I've now lost all my notes from that account!

Firstly I tried to switch off Notes integration in the Accounts section in System Prefs, but whenever I clicked the checkmark to un-check it, it would instantly re-check itself. When I looked in Notes, the notes for that account was completely gone. I restarted Notes but it was still absent.

So I tried removing the entire account and re-creating it. This time I could switch Note integration on and off without it switching it back to being on, but now in Notes there are no notes at all for that account! At least before I had some notes!

People might want to make a copy of their notes before they attempt this...

Good news everybody - 10.8.3 has finally solved the problem!

There were a few things to do after updating to get it to work though:

  • Go into the Library folder (hold down the option key and select Library from the Go menu in the Finder)
  • Type com.apple.notes into the search box
  • Delete everything that it finds
  • Go to System Preferences and select Mail, Contacts & Calendars
  • Go through each account, first making sure that the IMAP Path Prefix on the Advanced... button is set to INBOX and then making sure that Notes is ticked in the Use With: box.

And that was it! It only took them 7 months and 3 system patches to fix it!

All my notes have vanished
