I tried downloading Mountain Lion on my MacBook but got a message saying "Mountain Lion is not compatible with your computer". Why not? I currently have OS X 10.7.4 successfully installed and running.

The following Macs with 10.6.8 or later, 2GB of RAM, and 8 GB of hard space (presumably an additional 15% of free hard disk space will be beneficial as has always arbitrarily been found in the past) will be able to upgrade to Mac OS X 10.8 when it is released in July 2012:

iMac 7,1 and later

MacBook 5,1 and later

MacBook Pro 3,1 and later

MacBook Air 2,1 and later

Mac Mini 3,1 and later.

This is rediculous. I have a Mac Pro 2007 and it still runs fine. I have ugraded the ram and video card since then and my computer runs flawlessly. Is there a way around this to load this update. I am not going to purchace another $5000 computer just to upgrade the software when my computer still runs better than most of the mac laptops people have.

What in this update now makes my computer defunct? It's not even a major overhaul.

I am not wanting support for my hardware, this is a software that uses my hardware which isn't defunct. I can run the new windows OS perfectly fine so it's sort of sad that I can't run an OS that is supposed to be cleaner and faster on the same hardware.

Windows will tell you what is compatible with thier software, but at least they let you download it and see for youself if you don't agree. I don't even have the option of installing it and then saying, ok, maybe this isn't a good fit.

I have a suspicion that this is them trying to force us with older hardware to buy new computers. Which would be fine with a $1500 laptop, but not with my $5000 desktop which hasn't even been upgraded too much from when I bought it.

I would like pointed out what exactly in this software update is causeing it so that the WHOLE OS can't be installed. I would understand if one part wasn't compatible. Apple is just looking out on money because I will sadly have to find it online and do a workaround now to install it. There is no way I am shelling out $5000 anytime soon when I have a perfectly fine computer right in front of me.

I just want a good explination of what exactly about my computer isn't compatible... other than just the "age". I have done upgrades myself and feel it's a really strong computer.
