Why does Mountain Lion want a Java runtime?

Mountain Lion keeps bugging me about "To open JavaApplication, you need to install a Java SE 6 runtime." It won't leave me alone! How do I stop this?

And what is "JavaApplication", anyway?

iMac (27-inch Mid 2010), Mac OS X (10.7.3)

When is the message popping up? While using Safari? Is there a particular website that triggers the message?

Java SE 6 Runtime can be installed by opening Java Preferences which you'll find in the Utilties folder inside your Applications folder.

I can't say I recommend installing it though unless you can figure out what it is your trying to do that requeres it.

The message - "To open JavaApplication, you need to install a Java SE 6 runtime" - popped up when I wasn't using *anything* except the Finder. I have absolutely no idea what it meant. The dialog box allowed me to choose 'Not Now' or 'Install', but if I said Not Now, it would just come back a minute later. It did have the Software Update logo on it though, FWIW.

I didn't want or need to install the Java runtime, but once I did, the nagging went away.

What you saw was exactly the message that would come up if you launched Java Preferences.

It's odd that it would just pop up on it's own.

Now that it's installed, I'd be interested to know what happens if you now open Java Preferences and uncheck (turn off) runtime Java.

As I said before, it doesn't seem right to be running it without knowing why.

Nothing happens. I opened Java prefs, unchecked the runtime Java, and since then, smooth sailing.

Although I didn't need to uncheck the runtime(s) to stop the incessant nagging. All I had to do was *install* the runtimes. And I wouldn't have even done that if the **** dialog box didn't keep popping up over and over again....in any case, I'm not actually using the runtimes, I only had to download them. Which is enough, I guess.

I have exactly same probrem.

The pop-up which says "To open JavaApplications, you need to install a Java SE 6 runtime." will appear evertime as soon as I'm logging in since I've upgraded to Mountain Lion into my iMac mid 2011.

My log in items are

  • iTunes Helper
  • Dropbox

I'm going to go to my local Apple Store and then, ask the Geniuses.

I'll report if the cause of this problem turns out.
