Q: Overheating Since Mountain Lion

since you just upgraded to ML, spotlight maybe busy indexing your drive.

let spotlight do it's thing and check back after an hour or two and see if your macbook is heating up.

open activity monitor and check out all processes and see what's using up most of your cpu's resources.

highlight the ones using the highest %CPU and hit quit process.

see if that sorts out your overheating issues...

open up disk utility and verify your permissions.  repair if needed.  restart after you've done the repair.

I bought my Macbook in June 2012 and it was running hot the whole time. A week or so ago they added an update which helped fix this dramatically. Now I upgraded to Mountain Lion and the overheating is back (techincally it's not overheating but if it's uncomfortable to have on your lap, it's too hot right)?

One work around I have done until they release the Mountain Lion patch update like the did the Lion one a week ago is install smc Fan Control. Basically by defauly the fan runs at 2000RPM and this allows you to increase that minimum. I have set it to 4000RPM and there is very minimal audible difference and it is bringing the core temparature down for the most part all of the time. You can go higher but I think thats overkill.

smc Fan Control is free, after you install it, it resides in your notification area in the top right (this is where you can change settings etc)

I have a I-Mac mid 2010, 16GB ram, SST drive Intel I7 and the fan has not shut off once in 10 hours or basically since I've installed Mountain Lion.  Since SMC isnt an option on my machine, what now?  Revert back to a earlier version with my Time Machine?

I had the same problems, machine getting hot then laptop froze, displaing only a grey screen.  I could only get it back by restarting the system.

Taking Bimmer 7's advice I opened the activity monitor and checked out all processes and found Chrome was using up most of my cpu's resources.

Now I am using Safari the over heating and shutting down appears to have stopped - finger's crossed!

Nope, that didn't change it for long - after an hour it overheating again frozen gray screen and fan continuallyon.

Well, this fixed my issue...Dont know why but now my temps are normal and my fans are too

How do you know if the smc was rebooted. I tried to follow this but it doesn't seem to have done anything for me. Does it give some notification that it has been reset?

I have Temperaturmonitor installed version 4.96  The difference in my secondary heatsink is 20°C. I noticed that after the smc reset my fans stay off as before the upgrade.  Immediately after ML every single temp was higher and my fans came on after 10 minutes of use.  I have a mid 2010 27" i7 mac-pro with SST and 16GB of ram.  My Air book 2012 didnt even flinch when I installed ML, and I was shocked when my "baby" started overheating.  Its been okay so far...fingers crossed

I thought t the above link had fixed the problem, but no, after less than 30 mins the fan kicked in and I got a gray screen, which was frozen - I had to reboot to get back in.

Now removed Mountain Lion and guess what, working perfectly!
