I agree. You can stream video to your TV that has DRM, why can you not mirror your screen...?

No, but I saw a review that corrcted something about audio not working.

They seem to have a free trial to download and their support section suggests a removal tool.

I've seen mixed user reports about performance.

I have no affiliation with the company whatsoever it's just that several people have mentioned Airparrot in the AppleTV forum when questions about mirroring have cropped up.

It would be great if they did implement a software solution but for there to be any progress in that area I think they'd need massive feedback. There are supposedly 4 million units now though.

Different process.

Airplay pushing a stream from iTunes or using Computers to access the library on AppleTV simply streams the downloaded media file which is pre-processed to h264 format and decoded by AppleTV.

To mirror the stream requires generating the equivalent of the media file on the fly by compressing displayed frames seen on your monitor to h264 format plus streaming the resulting stream. This compression is highly processor intensive.

I understand what you're saying, but my iPad can do it, why not my MacBookPro?

I'm HUGELY disappointed. I only just switched to Apple last year and find myself, for the first time, very unhappy. For the last few weeks I found myself counting down the days until I could mirror my iMac on my Apple TV (I even upgraded from version 2 to 3) only to be let down by fine print saying my iMac is too old (even though I bought it LAST YEAR!)

The theory for Macs is that the Intel processors since early 2011 have specialised h264 encoding:

I switched form Windows to Apple with all my devices in November 2009. Since then I have never even thought about switching back to windows.

Apple combined stylish design with functions that were sometimes revolutionary but always you could trust that they just work. Very unlike Windows.

But even more important was that I alway had the experience that even when your hardware was a couple of years old, you get the updates that make them work with the newest features.

When I know that I have to buy a new Mac every year, because otherwise I can't use the full range, I would not accept the definitely higher prices compared to the other companies!

That is exactly what Apple seems to do here for the second time. First the SIRI funktion only for the iPhone 4 S although the hardware of the iPhone 4 would be able to work with just fine.

Now this Airplay Mirroring cheat without a reason other that making the people buy new Macs!

Guys from Apple, we bought your expensice products because we knew we can use them for a longer period than the all plastic crap from D*LL or other producers. We relied on you keeping the update policy that you had during the Steve Jobs Era.

Keep behaving like this and you will definitely loose a lot of customers!

I think this is a real concern.

Computers are expensive purchases for most consumers and they cannot and will not upgrade every 2-3 years just to get some new features. Enthusiasts and Apple fans might.

This model might work for phones where people are accustomed to getting a new subsidised device every 12-18 months on contract, but not for desktops/laptops.

To be honest I'm not sure Steve Jobs being around would have made any difference here - it has always been do it Apple's way or the highway.

I used Airparrot and the audio seems to stream fine. I am also one of the people who had been counting down the days on this feature to realize my late 2009 iMac is out of date. Quite dissapointed as there is no hardware limitation or reason for this not to be included in older macs and it seems that AirParrot is proof of that 😝

Wish this was a bit more throughly advertised as I don't really care much about the other features of Mountain Lion......

Yeah, if you bought Mountain Lion for the purpose of mirroring your screen you should go to apple and ask for a refund for Mountain Lion.

There are a lot more features in Mt Lion...

Hardware wise, it does what it did when it was new, not like they are removing anything.
