HOW DO I REINSTALL THE OLD SAFARI?

Good luck trying. I tried from several backups, even tried running it from the clone (overnight old copy), and for whatever reasons Apple redid something that you can't open or restore v5.1.7. But I'd love to hear if someone does and how.

Also would like to revert back. If anyone knows how, please post.

I would use something like FileBuddy to locate all files with Safari in the name, back-up the files on a USB stick, delete them, disconnect from the internet and then try re-installing the 5.x.x version.

Have you searched on all the files with "Safari"? I found 410, many attached to extensions, other applications, etc., and sorting out which is just the Safari app isn't easy. Apple used to allow multiple versions of Safari (Snow Leopard and earlier), but under Lion Safari is embedded (like MS) into the OS and not a separate application. You can't delete it anymore and older version doesn't open after installing version 6. That's my experience so far.

OK, just tried deleting the Safari.app from FileBuddy and it came up with a message:

“Safari” can’t be modified or deleted because it’s required by Mac OS X.

I tried installing from Safari5.1.7LionManual.dmg and will only allow me to re-install over my existing 5.1.7 on another HD but not the one on which version 6 is installed.

TextEdit 1.7.1 in Lion 10.7.4 gives me the same message (I also have version 1.6 which I renamed to TextEditSL, which runs fine under 10.7 and 10.8):

“TextEdit” can’t be modified or deleted because it’s required by Mac OS X.

Will explore further as "root" and see if there are any file attributes that can be changed to allow me to delete the application

I've been trying as well without any luck, seems that Mountain Lion only works with Safari 6.

Personally I don't care for the new version at all. Activity Window is missing altogether and

so is Command-Shift-i a simple and effective way to send links via email.

Unified Search Box is a joke. If wanted that I'd use Chrome.

I'm not opposed to upgrades but not at the expense of our tools.

Right now I'm seriously considering going back to s simpler time, Lion or even Snow Leopard.

I own a Mac Pro with five internal 1TB drives. I cloned my main startup HD running 10.7.4 to one of the internal drives, then updated the cloned drive with Safari 6.0.

Restarted the Mac Pro from the original HD, logged-in as "root" and I was then able to delete Safari 6 from the cloned drive. I reversed the delete for the time being but when I get more time I will delete Safari 6 and attempt to re-install 5.1.7 on the cloned HD.

Fortunately, I have not applied updates to my main HD which is still running 10.7.4. I have an external 2.5" HD on which I have 10.8 installed and want to find a proper solution to the font display issue now that the Appearance panel has been removed from Safari Preferences.

Thanks for the link. It wouldn't install because it said I had a newer version already installed on the HD and installing it on the clone HD would mean turning off the overnight clone process for the duration of using 5.1.7. For me, sadly, it's one of those bite the bullet times with Apple and hope they listens to users and restore the lost features. Lesson learned.

I too hate Safari 6. Reverting is simple if you have a copy of 5.1.7. Log in as root and delete the Safari 6 app and then copy the 5.1.7 version into the apps folder. That's all there is to it. Log back in with your regular account and you're good to go - I'm typing this in Safari 5.1.7. Fortunately I have two drives - one with Snow Leopard (which in my opinion is better than Lion) so I had a copy of the old Safari.

Logged in as Root and deleted Safari 6.

I then copied 5.1.7 into apps folder but it crashes when I try and open it.

I hate too many things about Safari 6.0 to list here. But I bet a forced removal will corrupt OSX. I'm just going to use a different browser from now on. Thanks for ruining my weekend, Apple.

Yup, that's exactly what I've always relied on in the past. This is not the first time Safari has punched me in the stomach. 🙂
