Time Machine can't access sparsebundle Error 13 after Upgrade

Hey Community!

I just downloaded and upgraded to Mountain Lion - everything went well!

But when I tried to to a Time Machine Backup it says - can't access sparsebundle, Error 13.

Using a MyBook Live 2TB NAS on my Gigabit Router - it worked so far with Snow Leopard pretty well!!

What can I do?

What's wrong?

Thanks in advance!

Best regards from Austria,

David

If as it seems that you upgraded from Snow Leopard directly to Mountain Lion - that is you didn't install Lion, then you may well now be encountering problems related to changes in Lion (which are carried forward to ML) that affected some NAS.

You may need a firmware update for the NAS.

See if you can find anything regarding this form the manufacturers website.

You might also want to look at this, but I'd make sure your firmware is up to date first

Hello Steve!

Thank you for your post!

Well, I already posted into the Western Digital support forum, to get an information, if this is the case and the firmware doesn't support backups to ML. When Lion came out, they had to resolve some issues regarding the new AFP. The thing is, that for this AFP issue and the incompatibility the error message was another one, so that's what made me think, that there might be an other solution...

I also tried connecting to the drive via afp://IP.ADDRESS, but then time machine won't backup neither...

So I hope the firmware solves this issue...

What does the error message 13 actually mean? it just says, that the sparsebundle couldn't be accessed. Hopefully it's not damaged?!

I don't precisely what the err0r -13 means. They can often have multiple causes and cryptic explanations

There might be some slue in the log.

I forgot, yesterday, the obvious question/suggestion which was can you access other more ordinary files on the NAS from ML?

Or, can you access existing backups on the NAS from Time Machine in contrast to trying to make new backups?

I was having the same problem with a WD My Book Live External hard drive. I google searched it for a few hours and finally found someone who had the answer posted. I laughed at how simple it was! That time my problem was a error-1 I guess. However I ended up doing a factory restore of the external hard drive for specific reason other than that. That was a few days ago and I had forgotten about that error message and how I fixed it, so now I've been google searching again for days trying to find that post. I tried what someone one else posted about creating new disk image but that only gave me error-13, the same as you have. So! more hours of google searching trying to find the post again. However! I fixed it by accident and now the drive is backing up. Then I remembered that's exactly what that post told someone else to do. This is what worked for me and that other person on that post that I read a few weeks back. Whe you select your External drive in time machine, don't sign in as a registered user, sign in as a guest! That's all I did and no more error-1 or error-13. The drive just strated backing up right after that! Before it took awhile searching for the back up drive before it gave me those error messages and now it's backing just fine again, lol. I read pelople giving some long complex (though step by step) solutions, but for a non techie like myself, just reading them gave me a headache, lol. I figured I should should at least try and see if that helps someone else becasue it was real frustrating and I'm guessing anyone would feel the same when trying to fix this thing. Anyways! try that and I hope it helps. Good Luck!

Hello everybody!

@CeroOne46:Thanks for your advise - I will try that in the afternoon - maybe the solution is that simple?!

@Steve Holton:Thanks for your reply! I contacted WD already through the support forum. The told the community, that they are currently working on the compatibility to ML, it will take some time, as ML was just released..

I can access all other data on the drive: my shares, which I created manually are available in Finder. Also the sparsebundle and the backup file of Time Machine is available, if I browse to /Volumes/TimeMachine - so everything is there, but TimeMachine can't find them! I will try to login as a guest, maybe that works (see hint from CeroOne)

Thank you all for your help - I will give you a status update in the evening (GMT evening ;-) )

Best,

David

Baloney. Mountain Lion was publicly announced, and has been in beta testing for developers and some others, since February. They had plenty of time to get ready.

Hey! Glad it worked and your welcome. The solutions is that simple but I don't think many people know it. Just make sure to let anyone you come accross know about it if they're having the same troubles. Funny thing is though, the installation manual on the CD tells you to use Guest at the sign in, but the learning center says both Guest or Registered user are fine. That's why I was confused the second time I installed the disc. I figured that wasn't the problem after all because it was suggested as a way to get things working so it must be ok.

Anyone else this info helps! please make sure to pass it on. Allot of people having been trying allot of unecessay stuff that doesn't seem to be helping. That can real frustrtating and tiring so help them out if you can. This solution has worked for me as I previously said when I had both Error-1 and Error-13 messages. I hope it works for all those error messages.

I was very pleased to read CeroOne46 experience and the tip for the guest log on...... however it does not work for me.

I updated from Lion to Mountain Lion on release date with no problems whatsoever, until I saw that Time machine refused to make any new backups and stated in the popup

"Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "K-nas" the backup disk is not available" incidentally I also checked in the terminal and saw the infamous error 13

Ok - so then I started time machine itself and had direct access with no trouble to my complete backup history made under Lion.

I can also read and write on the other shares I have running on the NAS.

A second iMAC still running Lion makes regular backups to the same NAS wit no problem.

The NAS is an iOmega StorCenter ix4-200d

Hey! Sorry to hear that that didn't work for you. Perhaps that's only a solution for those using WD's MyBookLive External drives. The only three people that i've seen this worked with used that drive. I really don't have any more suggestions, cause like I said i'm not a techie so I don't know much about this stuff. I just want to make sure of one thing though! You did log in under guest in Time Machine Preferences and not in finder, right? I'm assuming you understood that from my first post and did just that, but I just want to make sure. If you did and do that, then obviously it doesn't work for you. But I suggest you just keep searching on google and hopefully someone found an answer that works for you. I forgot where it was but I've also seen someone on a post helped another guy with the same issue, but it was using a different method than what I suggested. I think they did something within disk utility and by creating a new disk image or something of that nature. Hopefully you find some method helps though. Good luck man and I do feel your pain!
