I enabled dictation on my mac through the System Preferences. First I tried going to notes and pressed the fn key twice, the Siri like mic appeared and I began to say simple words such us "hello" "how are you" and pressed done. The thre dots appeared for a few seconds then the 'three dots' went left to right and nothing appeared. I've tried this on notes, microsoft word, and also while typing this discussion. Any ideas?

Force Quit the app that you were using Dictation for then re-open up the app and try again!
Yes, internal microphone. and I Force Quit the Pages app and re-opened the app and tried again. Still does not work. I even enabled location Services in Security and Privacy settings. I am going to reboot and try again.
None of it is working. Geez, that's frustrating.
You should go to the Genius Bar and ask them to teach you to use mountain lion or use this help http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1351
Your link has nothing to do with this discussion. And no, I'm no going to drag my iMac to the Genius Bar. There is clearly something broken, probably at Apple's server end.
It is working on mine so I'm not sure that it's on Apple servers end.

I have tried disabling it and enabling it again like a million times, resterated my mac a million times, used different language, and i actually spoke different languages. None of it worked! My internal mic works perfectly fine with all other apps. This is just BS! 😠
It is some sort of bug for sure - I have the same problem you have on my MacBook pro, but works perfectly on the iMac, same settings obviously. I am sure a fix is on its way.
Yes same here. I have tried all the suggestion and cannot get the dictation to work. shows to be on, beeps when I hit fn fn but nothing. Now it's working. Strange I really did nothing to fix it it just seemed to start working at the middle of this post.
In settings, under dictation and speech, make sure that whatever audio input you are using is selected (below the purple microphone icon). Mine was set to automatic by default, and did not work. Changed to internal microphone and now works like a charm.

When I double click the command key (I switched the launch key in settings) I hear the dictation sound but no purple microphone comes up.
I am guessing it's some sort of bug just as andreafacchini earlier in this post. I mean all the settings look fine, everything is up to date. There can't be any other explanation. Might as well go to the Apple store with my macbook pro and show them the problem.
There was a bug in that upgrading to Mountain Lion muted my speaker. I had to restart and reset my SMC. To do that you restart holding down the shift option and control keys.
My dictation doesn´t work either, tried every possible solution and nothing on my MBP 13" mid 2010, and btw power nap settings are not available. hope they release the "firmware update" soon.
