I enabled dictation on my mac through the System Preferences. First I tried going to notes and pressed the fn key twice, the Siri like mic appeared and I began to say simple words such us "hello" "how are you" and pressed done. The thre dots appeared for a few seconds then the 'three dots' went left to right and nothing appeared. I've tried this on notes, microsoft word, and also while typing this discussion. Any ideas?

My User account is Admin only, and the Managed is under the Guest account which is disabled as I am the only user of my MBP. Still doesn't work, sigh. But thank you so much for the update!
Mine wasn't working either, I tried everything that people suggested and nothing worked. But I shut down my computer and while starting it back up I held down Command + Option + P + R ( P-RAM reset ) and now it's working perfectly.
Because other people have said that it randomly started working for them I can't be sure if this was what fixed the issue. I'd suggest giving it a try just incase.
Ok forget it, it worked once and now it's stopped again. -_-
Starting to think my computer just hates me...
And just like that it stopped working (didn't change anything).
Maybe it will randomly start working again.... or not. Ugh.
Does Dictation have to reach an Apple server (like Siri)? If so it might just b server overload....mine is working about 90% of the time..... but about 25% of that time I have a delay before I get the beep that tells me i can start dictating....

Well, Mine worked for about an hour yesterday and has stopped working again. I give up, the dictation seems to have a mind of it's own when / if it wants to work. This should have never made it out of Beta testing. Shame on you Apple.

Yes it connectes to a server. First thing it tells you when you turn it on is it will be sending what you say to Apple. My guess is the same, Its server overload from everyone dictating "Hello? test 1, 2, 3."
I don't think this is a server connection issue as the "Siri" icon does not even pop up, all you get is the beep. It does not try and connect to the Apple servers until it needs to dictate the message.
Thats what I am getting as well. I have read many people are having this problem and thats what made me think it might be there servers. Well, I will say it was very nice when it was working. 🙂
Hi Guys! I think mine is totally different. When I open up the system preferences I can't find Dictation anywhere around system preferences 😟 I dont know why, I restarted my laptop several times but still can't fint dictation.
Im using macbook pro 15" mid 2009.
Anyone can help me bout this?

The notification center is working fine, I have those notes and reminders also. but I'm missing the dictation...
