Nothing should be lost. The installer just replaces OSX and the default Apple apps.

However, check first that your 3rd-party apps will be compatible:

• No PPC apps will run on Lion or Mountain Lion.

• Check others here:http://roaringapps.com/apps:table

In addition, some older peripherals may not be compatible; and some 3rd-party Network Drives may need upgrades.

Mountain Lion should have come with Airport Utility 6.1. It's missing a few things from earlier versions, though.

And/or, restore the older version, probably 5.5.3 or so, from your backups. If it's named just "Airport Utility" restore it to an alternate location, such as your desktop, temporarily, and rename it to "Airport Utility 5.5" or whatever version it is. Then move it to Applications/Utilities.

Airport Utility 5.6 won't install on Mountain Lion, but it will run (Apple really dropped the ball on this one).

I agree, this is something of a major balls-up. AU 6 cannot configure an original AirPort Express, but its suggestion to use v5.6 is nonsensical since that refuses to install in Mountain Lion. So if you have any early AirPort Expresses (or Extremes), you can no longer configure them once you have updated to ML, which could be more than a bit of a problem for many people.

As you say however, 5.6 WILL run, even though they won't let you install it. So grab an old copy or use Pacifist to extract the app from its package and it runs fine in ML and you can again configure the early AirPort BaseStations.

This does look rather like Apple is sneakily trying to force everyone to buy new kit. I'm not normally such a conspiracy theorist, but what with ML being not installable on such relatively recent Macs and now this. Hmmm...

Let's just use 5.6.

Do you mean it doesn't appear on the Airport Utiity window at all? Or there's a message? Can you post a screenshot?

But yes, connect via Ethernet if you can't see it via WIFI.

(I don't understand why it's not still set up from before you did the upgrade.)

Ok, then it looks like you need to start "from scratch:" Power it off for a couple of minutes, then back on, and follow the manual.

Be sure it powers-up and the yellow light comes on.

If you don't have the manual that came with the TC, it should be one of these:

Time Capsule 802.11n (1st Generation) - Setup Guide

Time Capsule 802.11n (2nd Generation) - Setup Guide

Time Capsule 802.11n (3rd Generation) - Setup Guide

Time Capsule 802.11n (4th Generation) - Setup Guide

I'm not an expert on that, plus it's late here, and I need to go to bed soon. If you still have trouble with this, your best bet will be to start a new thread in the Time Capsule forum at: https://discussions.apple.com/community/wireless/time_capsule. That's where the networking gurus hang out.

I am also at a loss to understand why you need to touch the Time Capsule after the upgrade. I just upgraded 3 Macs from Lion to ML and didn't touch the TC and the backups just continue as before.

I also don't think I touched the TC when upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion although that was a bit fraught and I might be wrong there. The ML upgrade has installed like a dream. No problems at all.

However, if you do need to configure any BaseStation, I would always recommend that you connect it to the Mac via wired Ethernet. Trying to configure the very mechanism by which you are connecting in order to do the configuring is always likely to be more problematic than a fixed cable. I know it should work, but if it's not, that's the first thing to try.
