Same here. after installing Mountain Lion Mail sterted up and a dialog box poped up. "Upgrading your Mail database... This might take a few minues". I have been waiting tree hours since then The status bar stopped at around 30%. I rebooted my MacBook Pro and the ssytem picked up from the same status but does nothing. Help please!!

Apparently, it has to do with the iCloud service...

I was able to resolve it as follows:

Go to Apple (top left) -> Preferences -> iCloud

Make sure the checkmarks are in place for

Mail

Contacts

Calendars & Reminders

others... (if desired)

After I did that, it went through the Mail Database Update in seconds...

Good luck!

Mine also crashes.

The 1st panel is:

Mail Message Import, then I click on Continue

Then, next panel is:

The Upgrade failed, then again I click on Continue

Then the last panel is:

Your Mail Index has been damaged. To repair it, quit Mail. I click Quit and Mail closes!!!

Another thing is that in Mountain Lion in my Users/MyName/ folders there is no Library folder like I had in Snow Leopard before I upgraded to Mountain Lion. My Applications work fine except Mail!!!

😢

The Library folder has been hidden, starting in Lion. To access it, in finder, go to Go > Go to folder, and type "~/Library"

Speaking of which, I have fixed the hanging issue!

  1. Force Quit Mail
  2. Open Finder
  3. Go > Go to Folder
  4. Type in "~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData" (no quotes)
  5. There are three files that start with "Envelopes," delete them
  6. Re-open Mail

The upgrade should now proceed normally.
