I just tried this too and it worked, all it took was to open Mail and let it refresh the accounts.  Can't understand at all as to why, but glad this is settled. Thanks for the tip.

    Clear the cache ~/Library/Cache

    Repair disk permissions

Check to see if that fixes the issue

@Keith  Bravo!  Openning Mail first converts the notes database.  Everything's purring agian.  Thanks for sharing.

Yes; upgrading Mail solves the problem

Well, open mail preferences, go to the Mailbox menu and choose "rebuild". Then quit mail.app and start notes:) Now it's working without any problems. That's a disadvantage of upgrading, if running a clean installation, you can avoid many such troubles.

Rebuilding didn't help for me, but what did work was disabling syncing for Notes in Exchange, closing Mail, re-enabling syncing of Notes in Exchange, and then reopening Mail.

    No more crashing.

My MBP (late 2008) started crashing since I installed OSX Lion. Then switched to OSX Mountain Lion and everything seemed to be working fine. I ran disk utility and it repaired minor problems. Today it crashed 5 times and counting.

    HELP!

I try the whole cache delete someone suggest earlier and restarted.  It helped but did not work.  I got Notes to open this time and can see the Notes I made in iOS device, then it crash again.  Then for some reason, not having read the rest of this thread, want to try the new Mail program to see what's different and maybe see the notes in there like before.  Play with Mail, then I try opening Notes again, and Bam, it now works...

Then I see all the post you guys made about Mail updating the database.  Now my notes work..  Thanks for all the info!  It is pretty stupid how we have to open Mail for Notes to work and sync.  But at least glad it does work now.  Apple, pls fix things like this.

    Thanks.

Yes disabling note sync for Exchange account worked for me. After this my Note App is working but I guess this is a workaround I still need my Office Notes which are in the Exchange account anyway thanks for this solution now at least my iCoud notes are available on my MBA
