Will US AT&T plan work in Europe?

Hi,

I have the latest iPad and am currently a Verizon user for my phone. Verizon won't work in Italy or UK and I'd like to open AT&T account so that I can get cellular in these countries. Do I need to get a different Sim card or will it work seemlessly with US plan?
