Unable to delete files - permission access denied

Greetings,

I am trying to delete files & folders from a second internal hard drive used for data only, but I am unable to complete the task as first I have to enter my password, then I get the error message 'The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items.'

Getting Info for that drive and folders indicates that I have Read & Write permissions. I even re-applied the permissions using the drop down gear. I have restarted the workstation as well. No luck.

I ran the disc utility application to Verify Disc, which returned a message the the disc was good. Verify or Repair Disc Permissions were greyed out, which I believe they are supposed to be.

Any thoughts will be appreciated. Thanks, Scott

OK, I have completed all the recommended steps listed above in this posting and am at the point where Terminal is asking for my password, but Terminal will not allow any input at this point.

I have attempted several times in different ways to enter my password, but nothing appears in the password field. I have tried pasting it in and manually typing it in, but the entry fiend remains empty and nothing happens. Have you experienced this before?

Thank you Linc, you did mention that.

I again completed the steps, then pasted in the password, and waited about five minutes after which this message appeared:

Password:

scotts-mac-pro:~ scottxxxx$

I again attempted to delete the offending folder, but that did not work, receiving the same error messages described in my first post.

Here is what I did:

Opened Terminal>

dragged a copy of 'ls -Odel' (without the quotes)>

added a space>

dragged in the offending folder>

hit return>

drag a copy of 'sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd !$'>

enter password>

after a few minutes, the $ appears at end of code>

drag a copy of 'chmod -R -N !$'>

add a space>

hit return>

drag a copy of 'sudo !!'>

add a space>

drag a copy of my password

Here is the result:

chmod: Failed to clear ACL on file CADD Magic Downloads: Operation not permitted

chmod: Failed to clear ACL on file Portfollio for WEB: Operation not permitted

chmod: Failed to clear ACL on file CADD Magic Downloads: Operation not permitted

chmod: Failed to clear ACL on file Portfollio for WEB: Operation not permitted

scotts-mac-pro:~ scottxxxx$

Still cannot delete the folders.

Yes, I miscommunicated. What I should have said was that I ran your fist command for both folders separately, but still could not delete either, then I repeated the first command and then ran the next command 'chmod -R -N !$' and was able to delete one of the folders only.

Here is the result of running your first command on the bad folder:

scotts-mac-pro:~ scottxxxx$ ls -Odel /Volumes/Data\ HD\ 2/Z\ Photos\ Copied\ From\ XP-G/Portfollio\ for\ WEB

drwxrwxrwx+ 62 buldog1 staff uchg 2108 Dec 12 2006 /Volumes/Data HD 2/Z Photos Copied From XP-G/Portfollio for WEB

0: user:scottxxxx allow list,add_file,search,add_subdirectory,delete_child,readattr,writeattr,readextat tr,writeextattr,readsecurity

scotts-mac-pro:~ scottxxxx$

Then after the second command:

chmod: Failed to clear ACL on file /Volumes/Data HD 2/Z Photos Copied From XP-G/Portfollio for WEB: Operation not permitted

scotts-mac-pro:~ scottxxxx$

Then after sudo !! and password:

sudo !! sudo chmod -R -N /Volumes/Data\ HD\ 2/Z\ Photos\ Copied\ From\ XP-G/Portfollio\ for\ WEB

Password:

scotts-mac-pro:~ scottxxxx$

I still cannot delete the folder after the above actions taken.

Somehow that folder didn't get unlocked. Run the "chmod" command on it, then the "chflags" command.

It would be very much in your interest to figure out how this incredible mess got created, and to make sure it never happens again. It looks like the work of someone playing mad scientist. If anyone else has been tampering with your data, put a stop to it. If you're running some kind of "utility" software, get rid of it. All Mac "utilities" are worthless. or worse.

Hey Linc, first of all I would like to thank you for your effort as it goes above and beyond the call of duty. AFA Mac utilities, I don't use them, and believe you are correct in that regard. I have given some thought as to how this could have happened and have the following ideas: shortly after loading Lion I had some problem with my user account. I worked with Apple to resolve it, and a new user was setup. Another possiblilty is that I have a duel boot for some of the software I run due to compatibility issues. It could also be related to that as I see the text string 'drwxrwxrwx+ 62 buldog1 ' in my post above that is an old user name. Buldog1 appears in the Get Info>Permissions list for the bad folder, however that user cannot be deleted there as the minus sign is greyed out. I have again performed the chmod and chflags commands in that order and I am still unable to delete the bad folder. Thank you again.
