When I open the inspector I see "RECENT" with last 12 months, last import, photo stream etc.
I also have a PROJECT showing that isn't recent, in fact its one of the older projects. What determines the recent project list and how can I modify it?

Wow. I just answered this in another thread :-)
OK, so the "recent" project listed there is the most one you double-clicked when you were viewing the "Projects" thumbnails for your projects in the Project view under Library.
You cannot change the "recent project" by selecting other projects in the Aperture sidebar.
So give that a try. As for why it works this way, I can't say, but I do know that's how it works, that it's working for me as I was told it's designed to work.

Immediately under Library (top left of sidebar) is an item called "Projects." In that view, you get a thumbnail for each of your projects in the Aperture library. Double click one of those and it will be the "recent project" until you do the same with another project.
