ipod won't connect to screen or respond to any buttons?

This morning, my ipod touch started flashing the "connect to itunes" screen (with the usb cable and the itunes logo) and was really hot. we tried to plug it into the computer, but apparently it got unplugged because it was the "wrong chord". the screen then had a white streak shoot across the screen, and by the time we got home, the ipod was cold and now it won't respond to any buttons, respond to chargers, or connect to the pc. i've tried to restart it multiple times but it won't turn on at all. i assume we should have plugged it into the computer right when the connect to itunes screen popped up, but we didn't. is there any way we'd be able to save it, and any clue what is wrong?
