iMac 27" 2011 very slow after install

iMac with 2 tb hd and 16 gb memory worked fine with Lion. Upgraded to 10.8 today and system slowed to a halt. Every operation seems to take forever and the app store updates to iPhoto etc hang as they try to loan. Attempted to run AHT but could not. Rebooting holding the "D" launched 10.8 and not AHT. Tried rebooting with the DVD that came with machine (10.6.8 DVD #2) but it would not boot either (holding C launch 10.8, while holding option at startup gave choices of 10.8 or Apple Recovery). Checked permissions and they were fine. Also could not boot into safe mode as system hung with bar 1/4 of the way through loading.

Any thoughts what could be wrong? Running memtest overnight now.

go back to the recovery partition and reinstall ML.

How much space do you have left on your HDD?

Did you let spotlight index?

Initially, after installing ML, Spotlight will re index, this has the potential to slow down the system a little while it is doing that.

after installing ML hit cmd space, to see if spotlight is indexing and how long that will take.
