Why aren't my audio files playing in stereo now?

this problem only just started within the past few weeks. I'm on an old PowerBook G4 (don't laugh) on OSX 10.5.8. I have iTunes 10.6.3. I have a number of MP3 audio files that have very discrete left and right channels - what's on the left side should not be heard at all on the right and vice versa. I've been using iTunes to play these files without problem for the past two years. Tonight, I went to play them and they are almost mono! Lots of bleed between left and right. Just to check, I launched Audacity and played a few files through that and they were perfect.

What could have changed that is causing iTunes to play these files like this?

PowerBook, Mac OS X (10.5.8)
