upgraded to Mountain Lion fan is constantly running

MBP 2011

Upgraded with Mountain Lion and now the fan in constantly running. I've checked the activity monitor and there is no application taking over a few %.

I don't have anything running other than Chrome, finder, activity monitor, drop box.

I tried the the SMC reset suggested in other posts but that didn't solve the problem.

After shutdown and power up, the fan is off but then it slowly builds to full speed

Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Thanks I had not set for all processes when I took the view. I notice when set for all processes the process "ReportCrash" is running at 100%+

Any idea what this is doing. I've reset a few times and it keeps coming back

I can not quit this process, it keeps coming back

I spoke too soon. Disabling ReportCrash in that way has not helped completely. Fans continue.

Tried disabling ReportCrash. ReportCrash is disabled (no more +100% CPU) but fans continue to run

Check the brightness settings on your screen. Mountain Lion in some cases seems to crank up the brightness to 100%, causing it to work overtime.

ok, anyone from apple looking at this board? I see this problem in a variety of different spots so clearly it is a major issue.

how about at least some suggestion or at least we acknowledge the problem and we're working on it?

Hi guys,

Those who have problems with ReportCrash which uses the CPU over 100%, this means that you have a program installed that is not compatible with Mountain Lion. I had the same problem and my MacBook Pro is running at 90 degrees with report crash using my CPU at 130%.

What I did is I rooted what's causing the problem by looking at Application / Utilities / Console, and by looking what's written usually on the bottom of the page and see which program is causing the problem. Uninstall the program that is causing the problem and that should fix it.

The program that was causing mine was the Eset Cyber Security which is an anti-virus program but it's not compatible with Mountain Lion so I uninstalled it and my CPU fan went back to normal.

Hope this helps to some people.

Same here...but I have no applications in the Activity monitor that are over 10% so presume that none of htem are incompatible with Mountain Lion - however, still no idea why the fans are going wild.

do you have iStat installed?

I had the same issue and found that enabling and disabling the ‘Fan speed control’ functionality fixed it. The fan speed dropped from maxing 6000rpm to now to 1990 - 2005rpm

Based on your tip, I disabled ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4.app and now my fans have gone silent.

I did see a bunch of errors related to this app in Console, too.
