Can't change my status on message on ML
I've finally settled all the information about my message account, on Mountain Lion, but it kept staying offline not allowing me to change the status.
Why so?

If you are using iMessages, the theory is you are always available, just like if you were text messaging.
There is no online indicator for iMessages.
if you want to use the buddy list or status messages, you need to sign in with AIM, Jabber, Gtalk, or Yahoo.
If you are coming from iChat, and you used to use your apple id with it, you need to sign into AIM with your apple id and enable the service. then you will see your buddies on Aol Instant Messenger that is tied to your apple id.
Yeah, this is a bit of a bug. Try going to
Messages > Accounts
and deselecting all. Now reselect just ONE. Will it change status now?
Softwater, your advice is assuming they are using something other then iMessages.
There is no indication of an online status with iMessages (no buddy list, status message, so on). This is not a bug if they should be referring to iMessages.
I've no idea what iMessages is. In ML the chat program is called Messages ,and it does very much have a status indicator. Go look down the bottom left of the window (or for that matter the menubar icon, if enabled, which is grey if offline, black if available).
Sorry but it is called imessage (see the jpg) and I have no bottom on the left of the window.http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4719670/imessage.tiff
done and nothing changed... still offline
Lucas, please read what I wrote to you. There are no status indicators for iMessages, it assumes you're always available, just like with a Phone and text messaging. you just text your friend, you don't know if they are near their phone or not.
you need to sign into AIM with your Apple ID
go to Messages>Preferences>Accounts
hit the plus sign in the lefthand sidebar and then sign into AOL INSTANT MESSENGER.
That way all your buddies you had before, and also your status will be viewable. With this you can be available or away or have a silly message along with it.
iMessages is Apple's internet chat client. Instead of SMS, it uses Apple's own servers to relay information to other people on iMessages.
to begin using imessages, start typing in the name of someone in the To Field that you know is available for iMessaging. They most likely also have an iOS or OSX device. Some of your contacts will have a blue chat bubble next to them, those are the ones that Messages.app sees as iMessage users. click one of them and begin talking.
Think of iMessages more like a Text Messaging service.
If you sign into AIM you will unlock all the other features of Messages (formerly known as iChat) such as Status, Screen Sharing, Video chat, Audio Chat.
I think I got it, partially. The whole program is called Message and it handles imessages.
Unfortunately I've tried to add a second account and it says it's unable, since it's already in use by another device (strange). Then I've tried to log off Message and log on and nothing changed.
if you are signing into aim you need to check the ability to have accounts log into multiple devices.
Hy The SmokeMonster. I do not have AIM unfortunately, just an Apple ID (which I'm using for imessage) and an icloud account.
I do not have AIM.

Thanks. Wasn't aware of all that!
