Mountain Lion download stalling at 53.25mb

I am running an iMac 10,1 with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and purchased Mountain Lion yesterday but the download stalled at 53.25mb. I have sufficient Hard drive space and Wifi signal but it won't go any further. I tried re-lanching the App Store, then re-started my Mac and then finally stopped the download and started again but it got to the same point and stopped.

Any help would be much appreciated as I have exhausted all avenues I can think of.

I have been trying since last Thursday, originally the Apple support guy laughed me off and said it was being downloaded by millions of people at the same time and leave it until late at night it would probably go through quicker.

I then rang BT any way as if it starts downloading it wasn't a connection issue to Apples server like the Apple support suggested.

I tried disabling my firewall to see if that helped but no, but the BT helpdesk did suggest I rang back after the weekend so if there was an issue it would become more apparant as more people complained of the same thing.

I left it until Monday then tried again still same problem stops at 53.25mb, I tried Apple support again and this time they told me it was a know issue and it was a BT broadband fault.

I rang BT they also said they now knew about it and it is a firmware issue with the router. They would provide an update for it within 48 hours. That was Monday morning 30th July. They still haven't done it even after I chased yesterday and they said they would do a batch update for everyone by close of business Wednesday 1st August. So it's now Thursday afternoon week after launch and I still cannot download it.

If you are BT broadband and have a BT 2700HGV router, check your routers firmware on the settings page if that reads 6.3.9.63-plus.tm then you cant download it until BT updates the firmware. One day they might mend it, they told me 48 hours and lied, then the end of Wednesday lied .......

And I definately wont be doing what the Apple tech support suggested, just popping my 27" iMac under my arm nipping round a friends and downloading it on their broadband. Not so Genius.

I too am having the same problem, and have been back and forth with Apple and BTinternet.

My bt internet account is a business account and they seem to want to resolve it but they are still struggling.

I originally had the 2wire BT 2700HGV router and it wasn't happening .

They knew it wasn't a firmware issue now and they tried sending out an updated router BT2701HGV.

Got this all set up and no better than the 2700 although iyt felt like my connection speed for everything else seemed a toucjh better.

I am awaiting a call from their "Technical Ownership Unit" team tomorrow to walk me through a few things.

Apple are offering to refund my purchase , but that isn't really what I want - I want to be up to date and enjoying the new OS.

Maybe it would have been better to say "Heck - we'll put a copy on a DVD and sent it in the post"

I don't quite see what the problem is - because I can download other apps (in fact I downloaded Lion last year), I download movies, music and podcasts, so it can't just be because it's a big file.

Why does this download require more of the ISp than previous downloads?

As BT is one of the UKs main ISPs you'd think that there would be a bit more urgency on behalf of both companies to get this problem licked.

BT now have a solution they rang me and created a new ppoe connection and changed a few settings including disabling the firewall on the router. It downloads then, and then you can go back to the original router and network settings. Keep the connection they create in network settings so if you ever need to download files over 2Gb this is the only way you can do it, that's the problem basically any file over 2Gb

Good that they got you sorted

I finally got a call from the technical team and they said they had a fix and sent me out one of the BT Business Hub 3s (which in a previous conversation they said they couldn't do without me paying £80+ for).

However the good news is that it was easy to fit and made a connection pretty much straight away and I was able to go back into the App store and click to resume download of OS10.8 and it's now downloading properly.

So thankyou to the BT team and thankyou to Apple's team and to you guys on here as well - finally everything is working again.

I'm another who's had the 53.25MB failure issue, and it's 99.9% certain to be a router issue. If you're in the UK then the chances are you're with BT for your broadband. As mentioned above, there is a known issue with the 2Wire BT Business Hub, see link below, and probably other routers too.

"If you want Mountain Lion, or any other large download, then you'll need to get another router, or firmware upgrade if available." That however can be a pain, and if BT don't play ball then an expensive one. There is another solution however, and one that means no contact with BT, call centres or your local PC World 😢...

What I did was put in an old BTHomeHub that I had lying around to get it passed the 53.25MB point, and then paused the download while I reinstalled the 2Wire BT Business Hub. I then resumed the download and the whole 4+GB was on my iMac in a few minutes (well just over the hour). If you don't have a spare router, borrow one, you'll only need it to get the download passed the 53.25MB stage. For completeness, I waited until it was at about 150MB before pausing.

Hope that helps some. 🙂

I reported this issue with BT 2 weeks ago and they denied any problem with their routers. Only one hour ago I was told categorically that it was impossible for the BT router to be the problem. Then 30 minutes later I spoke to a different guy who was very helpful and admitted it was a BT problem and that it can be solved. I am now waiting for an engineer to phone me back with a solution. All I can say is persevere.

I also had this problem with the download stopping at 79.34mb and have a BT Business connection.

Possible solution if you have personal hotspot on another iDevice;

  • Activate your hotspot and select a password
  • If you are using a wired connection, disconnect it.
  • Enable wi-fi and connect to your hotspot using your password.
  • Continue to download.

It is a very flaky solution and insane that you need to do it, but it seems to be working for me.
