Q: ML: Printers no longer auto-quit (i. e. "stuck" in the dock)

After printing in Lion, the printer icons (representing the print spoolers or queues) in the dock could be set to "auto-quit" so they disappeared after finishing their (print) jobs.

With Mountain Lion however, this "auto-quit" feature seams to have disappeared. Thus, the printer icons remain "stuck" as active programs in the dock.

Has anybody else noticed this?

Any help on the horizon?

The auto quit feature should still be there, though the preference was removed, but the app won't quit if there was a problem with the job or a warning from the printer. Does this happen with all of your printers?

    Yes, unfortunately.

Happens with every printer (HP laser, Canon inkjet, Samsung laser).

And happens even though the print jobs run without errors.

Even re-installing the printers doesn't help.

The printer proxy (the printer icon in the dock) does auto quit if you don't select it. But, in addition to what John has stated, if you select the icon or switch the view to the printer pane then it will not auto quit.

Also, if you have upgraded from Lion to Mtn Lion, you could try a reset of the printer system before adding the printers again.

    @PAHU

That's what I thought, too. Alas, it isn't so.

The printer proxy simply doesn't auto quit. Even if I haven't even come close to the icon with the mouse (or used some other technique to switch to the proxy or its icon). It simply sits there in the dock after the print job has finished.

I also just tried resetting the printer system and re-installing all the printers and settings - no luck.

    The proxies are still stuck.

    Things are getting weirder:

Now, the HP (laser) proxy does auto-quit.

However, the Samsung (laser) and Canon (inkjet) proxies do not auto-quit.

    I am beginning to think this is a driver/proxy issue ... ?!

Does removing the proxies in ~/Library/Printers help? Maybe they aren't being recreated when re-ading the printer?

    Ok,

I now deleted all the printers, reset the printing system, re-installed drivers for my HP, Samsung and Canon printers. And did a "Repair Permissions" run in Disk Utility.

    So far, moderate success:

The HP proxy (laser via LAN) seems to auto-quit now. (Most of the time ... !)

The Samsung proxy (laser via LAN) does the same.

However, the Canon proxy (inkjet via WLAN) still refuses to auto-quit. (I guess this may be due to, let's say, questionable quality of their drivers.)

So it seems this is more of a printer driver issue.

So it seems this is more of a printer driver issue.

I have four users printing from 10.8 to a number of different Canon inkjets and none of them have this issue. The proxy always quits if they do not interact with it.

Given that each of your modifications has seen you go from none of the printer proxies working correctly to one and then two printers auto-quitting, I would say there is something questionable with your ML build. I'd be wiping ML after a clone or at least a TM backup and starting fresh, with a new alternate account. If that works then you can migrate your TM data into the new clean install.

    Thanks for your help.

Is any of your users using the Canon Wireless software (Canon IJ Network) for printing and scanning?

I am not sure I want to use the "nuclear" option (wipe and re-install) just yet since the only thing not working right now appears to be the (d***) Canon printer ...

    Greetings to Sydney from Berlin.

Yes, all are connecting via wireless. We have an MG8150, MG6250, MX885 and MP980 that are connected to the Airport Extreme via wireless. We also have a Pro 9000 connected to the USB port of the Extreme that the Mac's connect to via wireless.

And at home I have an MP990  that I connect to via wireless.

Are you using the final release (build 12A269)? I ask because there was a Developer Preview build that did fail to auto quit.

Yes, indeed, I am working with the final release.

However, I do think it might have something to do with the fact my Canon (MX860) is slightly ancient. And so are its drivers ... ?!

Same problem here with the final release.

The "autoquit" no longer work with other applications, like the Apple utility "archive utility", or FlashMount ...
