iTunes does detect Apple TV and I can play audio through Apple TV. Air Play Mirroring is not working.
Nevermind, my iMac is too old for Air Play Mirroring.
Tell Apple your not happy with the missing support of "Older" Macs.

I had the same issue. I could connect right after I upgraded to M Lion, however, it stopped working. It showed a black screen but audio kept working. Itunes also worked, it even showed my videos with audio but when I tried to connect the airplay with mirroring, it only showed a black screen. I tried morroring my iphone and iPad and guess what? They worked!!
Good news???? I just rebooted the system and mirroring on my Macbook Air and Pro worked again.
Try that guys!!
A friend told me about Air Parrot...it is a $10 Ap and they give you 20 minutes free time to try it out. I worked beautifully....airparrot.com
Can I assume this issue only applies to the AirPlay Mirroring feature in Mountain Lion, and not AirPlay support cooked into applications themselves?
i.e., if an app supports playback through AirPlay, it should still work, even if the Mac is too old to support AirPlay Mirroring, right?
Guys my AirPlay still not working to stream the video to the TV I'll do it I audio works fine, why?
AirPlay Mirroring
Requires a second-generation Apple TV or later. Supports the following Mac models:
Does your iMac meet the above requirement?
Hope this helps 🙂
Ignore.
How do I find out if my Imac purchased in June of 2011 is new enough to mirror with apple tv. I was able to watch for 1 day at beginning of olympics, but have been unable since.
You can use AirParrot or AirDisplay. I Do!
People they are using Airplay to show their presentations on TV's and Projectors. now all PHD's, Doctors, Professors, Teachers have this Big problem and that APPLE does NOT care at all. it's been a long time and with 10.8.1 updates all we've got surprised that this issue still not resolved!!
We should go with Samsung, for real they are beating Apple with Phones and very soon with Laptops Samsung Series 9. so next time Apple has to resolve their Stupid BUGs ASAP, the only word I can say for now is....F#ck Apple Administration after Steve Job left, and Apple will be gone within 10 years, remember my words! Period.
I have a "mid 2011" imac - accoding to "About this mac" and the airplay icon doesn't show up in display preferences or at the top of the screen. Any idea why not?
