iMac crashed frequently after memory up-grade

After I installed bigger memory cards, my iMac crashed frequently, the dark window shade came down often with the message, "you must restart the computer now", and it's generally not happy. The screen saver causes freezes and the images look all pixelated and strange. I replaced the old, original memory and it runs fine again. The computer recognized the new memory but also many crashes upon starting up.
