This is a new feature in ML that secures the volume slider if you are foiund to have ilegal music on your computer.

I'm in the same boat as you, except with a mid-2007 MacBook Pro. Volume control is greyed out and when I use the function keys to adjust, it shows the "do not enter" circle (the one with the line through it).
Yes apparently quite a lot of people are having the same issue, I reseted Pram and SMC and it was over, i guess mountain lion has some issues to recognize soundcards... i don't know ^^ Thanks by the way.
Oh brilliant I am glad you solved it.... Stuff like this whilst frustrating tends to happening in the first weeks of a new OS
SOLUTION:
I had the same issue with both volume and keyboard background lighting. This was what solved the problem for me:
1. Make sure you have your sound settings changed to 'internal speakers'
go to system preferences; then click 'sound'; then select 'internal speakers' there
2. Re-start the machine.
3. Problem solved!!
Hi,
What do you mean by SMC and Pram? I have the same problem but I'm terrible with computers/just want to watch some Netflix...
Thank you
I have same issue but can't even change settings to "internal speaker". I don't have that option in system preferences. The only option listed is "headphone".
This solution worked for me, too.
Is headphones an option even with the headphone unplugged? Any other speakers plugged in through USB (monitor) or otherwise? Unplug 'em if so.
i just face the same problem. Obviously if after reset SMC & PRAM still happen the same. try this way...
plug an earphones to the aux and you'll see volume can be adjust the eject the earphones.
Everything back to normal. 😀
A simple solution no need to restart:
1. Plug in your earpods;
2. Plug out;
Then you should be able to adjust the volume.
This worked for me. Well... my headphones were plugged in when the sound disappeared, but as soon as I unplugged the headphones the volume became adjustable again. If I then plugged the headphones back in, it was no problem. Five second fix.
No more sound and can't change volume anymore
