3gs backlight not working

The backlight of my iPhone 3Gs has suddenly died. I can still see the icons on the display if I look in direct light but the backlight has totally disappeared. I searched online for similar problems and it seems that some people have had similar issues but only because they had dropped their iphone in water. No such thing happened with mine. Everything was normal and then I picked up my phone and there was no backlight!!! Is it possible to repair it somehow?
