No USB keyboard or WiFi after Mt Lion Upgrade

Since upgrading to mountain lion from the latest version of Lion, I no longer have USB or Wifi support it seems. My 2008 mac pro doesn't recognise when I plug anything except a additional wired mouse, and I can only get that to work if its plugged in at boot. Also the second mouse is extremely laggy and is almost impossible to click on anything. I can still use my keyboard to get into verbose/single user/ reset pram on boot, but after that both the main OS and recovery are useless. The only error I see is when I use single user mode. After the OS has loaded after a couple of minutes I get some text on screen that says IOUSBfamily is having trouble on port 2 (where my keyboard is plugged in) This is driving me crazy. I did make a backup and I have a spare hdd in my mac pro with lion on it, and am still able to boot into that and everything works fine.

Is anyone else having this kind of problem, and is there anyway to remedy it?

Here are my specs

Mac Pro 2008 2.8ghz

ati 2600 xt (boot + secondary monitor)

ati 6870 (primary monitor 1900*1200)

8 gig of ram

HDD slot 1: mountain lion/Applications running on 128gb ocz SSD

HDD slot 2: users are located on a 1 TB HDD

I've tried disconneting all USB ports, removed extra hdd's, dvd drives, graphics cards and nothing works.

Someone from AppleCare saw my posts on these forums and called me asking for more details on this issue. So they are aware of it and someone is working on it to identify the problem. And it shows that they do pay attention to these forums. 🙂

I have a Genius Bar appt today. I'm going to just ask them to roll me back to Lion until this issue is addressed. There's nothing in ML that I wanted so badly that I can't even use my computer...

I have verified you can reinstall Lion if you have one of the USB sticks Apple sold. When it boots into that setup USB mouse and keyboard work fine allowing you to format harddrive and install Lion.

You can also put the drive in another machine, firewire etc... and install Lion before putting disk back in original. I know most dont have access to another machine but some friend might have one.

Apple called before and said engineers have test machines running and are working on a fix that would be rolled out in future. Maybe as a help page but probably as a download.

So you might as well go back to Lion if you can, waiting and then trying to update the broken computer may be too dificult. Once fixed the patch should be in the download in the App Store as it delivers the install that way.

If you are currently working with Apple on this then carry on as I would think they could use your test data.

The Geniuses did a clean install of my machine and everything works again. I have to restore from Time Machine but at least I have my computer. There's nothing on ML that I really wanted except AirPlay which I can't use anyway.

One of the Geniuses said that he has a 2009 Mac Pro and is also having USB problems, although not as severe. Sounds like this OS was poorly QAed on older machines.

I will wait for an guaranteed fix before I try and upgrade again.

I'm having exactly the same issues as everyone else on here - the wired USB aluminium keyboard no longer works with a new 10.8 instal on an early 2008 Mac Pro. I managed to get a mouse to work but still no keyboard.

After reading through this thread I think I'm going to do a time machine restore in recovery mode.

If anyone has any updates I'm eager to know if theres a fix so I can use 10.8.

Cheers,

Jon

There will be an update repairing these problems, probably the USB driver is the problem, if someone has WiFi AirPort card it also does not work.

The last phone call with Apple Care and Apple Poland told me that analyze the problem and soon will be updated.

I send them logs and system profile, everything what they want from Lion and Mountain Lion.

We have to wait and see what Apple do about this.

Hi Guys,

i downloaded the ML on the day of the release, the instal was fine and was very happy to have the new OSX. I have been using apple products all my life and to be honest i was very dissapointed with the OSX and the issue with the USB ports not working so my mouse and keyboard are disabled.

I use my Mac Pro3,1 for my work and i feel i have been very badley let down by apple, I contacted apple and spoke to a tech guy called Declan who was helpful to start with then took all sorts of reports, got me to try out different keyboards and mouse with no solution to this problem.

On Thursday 26th July the last discussion i had with apple technician Declan who assured me that he will contact me and give me an update for this problem. Since then i have emailed him on numerouse occations but he has not responded to my emails.

I have lost allot of money due to this problem and i feel i have been let down by Apple. I am still in this situation and have no solutions.

The funny thing is, i always make fun out of my family and friends who use PC and how unreleable it is and now i feel that Apple has lost their touch.

If anyone from apple reading this, here is my AppleCare case ID 333397049.

Finally, all i can say is you have lost a great fan of apple.

Well I've managed to do a system restore and revert back to 10.7 via my time machine backup and now I have a working keyboard again. It amazed me that I could get through the system restore without having to tap any keys, except for the initial cmd+R on start up.

So I'm back up and running and for those of you who use the computer for work, I suggest you do the same. I do hope that all of you did a time machine backup prior to installing 10.8!

For those wishing to do a restore, it is really simple. Hold down the cmd and R keys at startup. You will be shown a language selection screen, choose your language and click continue. Now you'll see a list of options. The top one is the option to restore from a time machine back up. From there you will have to choose the drive where the backup is stored, choose the latest backup and then select where the system needs to restore to (your HD with OSX on it). After that it takes about 35 minutes and you'll be back up and running,

Good luck!

As an (currently off-duty) applecare advisor, I can tell you that this kind of problem usually happens because of the way ML makes changes to the SMC and the PRAM. More often the SMC, from what I have seen. This is especially true for the USB versions of the mouse and keyboard.

If you want to upgrade to ML, to avoid this problem make sure you download ALL of the updates that exist for your machine BEFORE you update to ML. I can't tell you how important that is...!

For all of you who did not, you will have to do one or more of the following:

1)Reset your SMC. Really easy to do, and well documented on this support site.

2)Reset your PRAM. Much more tricky, but just as documented here.

3) If 'a' doesn't fix the problem, reboot and do 'b':

a. Boot computer into safe boot. Hold the "shift" key down after you hear the BOONNNGG after powering on, and keep it held down until you see a black bar under the "spinning gear"

b. Load the Recovery mode (hold command and R just after boot and keep held until you see the menu) and see if your mouse, keyboard and wifi are working there. If they are, use that same recovery menu to reload the operating system. Because ML does the EFI update you didn't do before updating, it should work after the second reinstall.

Just remember, you can't buy Lion any more in ANY way, so if you don't still have the Lion installer download saved on your computer, you CAN'T GO BACK.

Hope that helps!

I have now spoken directly with an engineer at Apple California. We have taken all sorts of logs from the machine and im assures the engineers are now working on a solution to the problem.

Unfortunately it has nothing to do with software updates as my machines were uptodate.

You cannot re-install Lion and then ML as we have done that and all issues still persits.

You can install from a Lion USB stick if you can get a hold on one. Local Apple Store or Ebay may be best bet for that.

They have arranged another call tonight at around 7:30 UK time so I will let you know whats going on once I have spoken to the engineers.

To add to this I tried reseting the SMC and PRAM several times with no joy. I also had the latest software updates for everything on my machine as well as all the latest drivers. Despite all this I still had the problem of OSX not recognising my wired Apple aluminium keyboard.

Also, I am now running back on Lion after installing Mountain Lion by doing a system restore. So you can go back provided you did a time machine back up prior to installing 10.8.

Aug 1, 2012 2:56 AM in response to GWuWeHo

Also, yes, it was not MEANT for older machines, so it doesn't work as well on them. Airplay only works if you have an intel i5 or i7 processor anyway, just to let you know.

This problem will likely be resolved very soon, so in the mean time, making sure you prepare your system for the update beforehand will save you a nightmare later! It isn't happening to everyone who has already installed ML, and I can assure you that it has been installed successfully thousands, if not tens of thousands or more times on each kind of computer that has been released with a core2duo processor or better. At worst, you will have to have to restore a system that you just installed (you won't lose your data unless you want it gone), and at best you will have a working copy of an awesome OS after a few minutes of fancy bootkey-holding.

And yes, we do read these forums. We actually really do care what happens to you (some of us even obsess over it.)

If you are having problems like these when you are installing a version of ML you just purchased or downloaded, you can call us to get help with getting it past the set up or with these kinds of problems that occur after you install. We want you to be happy with your mac, and I have seen these 3 "missing connected things issues" solved more than several times. So it is possible!

Aug 1, 2012 3:07 AM in response to JonGilbert

Yes, a time machine backup is a possible way too.. When you are doing the restore, remember that if it happens afterwards to boot into the recovery mode and do the restore from there - the Lion recovery mode loader is replaced when ML is loaded onto the system by the ML recovery mode loader, and while the downloaded installer from the app store has to run from within the Lion OS as it installs ML onto the exact same part of the hard drive it is on. When restoring from the ML recovery menu, it can work with the whole hard drive without having to really worry about what system is running in the background, because the recovery mode is not running in any OS (even though it was created by one).

I wish there was a better way, believe me! The exact reason for this problem has to do with the way ML is installed, but I started looking here to see if someone had come across the actual faulting module yet... Until that is done, this somewhat repetitive method of installation is the best way (unfortunately for all of us).

I'm finally up and running in Mountain Lion, After A few calls with Apple Support (whom were very helpful) An engineer requested I try removing my Airport card. I thought that was a little odd, but what the heck. So I physically removed the Airport card from my mac pro, closed it up, booted and sure enough, I have USB again. I had to run a Ethernet cord across the room to get LAN access, Its not perfect but it beats not being able to use my computer at all.

I'm not sure what a long term solution would be if you are using Wifi, hopefuly thats what the engineers are looking into. Apparently our mac pro's use specific Airport Cards for our model only, I'm not even sure where to buy the correct one.

On my mac, when I bought it, it did not come with a wifi card installed. I Had a mac mini that that I use on LAN and removed the wifi card from that computer and placed it in my mac pro. It work fine for years but after ML update it became the cause of frustration for me.

THis happened to me on multiple macs during the mountain lion and previous os install. Just unplug all peripherals from your mac accept the mouse and keyboard. Reboot, and it will probably work. Has worked everytime for me. Note, ALL peripheral needs to be unplugged, there should be nothing plugged into you mac but the keyboard and mouse if applicable.
