Mid 2009 Macbook Pro Airplay

I have a mid 2009 Macbook Pro and was interested in using airplay to view my screen on my tv with my apple tv. Is this possible? I am currently upgrading to Mountain Lion and did not know that it was only for 2011 and beyond computers. What is it about my computer that will make it so I cannot use the airplay feature that Mountain Lion is now providing?
