My phone shows 865-6696 for incomming calls.

I have four phones all with the same problem. We have been trying to get it sorted for over 6 months now. First they said it was a software problem with Apple and were working on an update, and now Apple are saying it looks like it is a carrier problem with Sprint and want me to pay to have it checked out by them.

I noticed the same thing when I recently switched to Sprint from AT&T but tonight I finally figured out what is happening. If you are on a call and another call comes in and you put the first call on hold, when you try to go back to the first call after ending the second call, it appears that you have cut off the first caller.. then your phone rings with the 865-6696 number and it is the first call ringing back. I assumed the caller had re-dialed after being cut-off, but have now verified that they had been on hold all along and when the hold ends, your phone rings and they are re-connected. Tried it with two iPhones verified that it is simply the original call on hold, not a new call.

Normally on SPRINT, if it is an unknown number, it will say "Private" or "Unknown", however... IF you have set up a Google Phone Number, and have it set to forward to your Cell phone, the "Unknown" number from Google translates to 865-6696 on Sprint, as the letters are sent over as key presses which are interpretted by Sprint as 865-6696 (unk-nown). So it is not so nefarious, it is just a person with caller-id blocking, calling your Google phone number, which many of us have set up so that we too can be somewhat anonymous when we want to.

No. I have had Sprint for 10 years. I have received multiple phone calls over that period where the caller is shown as "Unknown" and not by the number 865-6696. The only time it has shown that specific number is when the unknown call was sent to my Google number which was then forwarded to my Sprint cell phone. You don't know what you are talking about.

I guess the law of the land in here is to act like a *****? Okay. Since you've both dished it out first, I'll respond.

First off, thanks to both of you for showing off your *****-side. It's good to know, even in an Apple forum, that there is a healthy dose of douchebaggery. So thank you, appleMDP, for showing your high-and-mighty omniscience on what I know and what I do not know.

To reiterate, what I didn't realize, KiltedTim, is the seemingly infinite intellect of appleMDP. But what I do realize, and know, is that I, and my Sprint service, which I worked in the field on for years, is not integrated with Google voice.

I don't care what you "experience", appleMDP, because experience is subjective. The fact of the reality is what I wrote above. I can't believe there are still people like you trolling in forums. I'm done with both of you.

Sorry, but.....

I listed the original question.

My IPhone will display 865-6696 even for numbers I have in my contacts. One of which is my mother (Tracphone) who barely knows how to use a cell phone and "blocking" her number before she calls me is absurd. Another is my sister (AT&T). Many are work contacts etc. I am beginning to presume that it relates to a particular carrier (other than Sprint) that for some reason, Sprint can't read their information right and lists everything as unknown. It is unbelievably annoying though and probably 60-70% of the calls I receive come up with that number. I do get the occasional "blocked" or "unknown" in words. I believe it is a carrier problem, and the problem according to recent communication with Sprint technical service, lies with Sprint and they are working on it. Thank you all for your input though. And...be nice,. I appreciate all the efforts to help.

To all on this thread ... another wrinkle.

I am getting this number on calls from overseas (Denmark); but only occasionally - it seems to happen when I call a number there ... if there is no answer and while i am leaving a message, I will get an incoming call ... with the 865 number - but there is, of course, no one on the other end of it.

FWIW, my carrier is Virgin Mobile (though I think they use other carrier's towers)
