As soon as I upgraded to Mountain Lion, my Mail sounds stopped. I checked the Mail preferenced and there is a New messages sound selected as is Play sounds for other mail actions.
I also checked in the Notification section of System Preferences and Mail has Play Sounds when recieving checked.
I also checked Sound Effects under Sound and that is set to max volume and Play user interface sound effects is checked
Any ideas?

I have the same sound issue and followed your advise and reset the PRAM. It worked for a while. But now the sound is off again. Any help would be appreciated.

I too have lost my Mail sounds again. Resetting the PRAM worked for a few days, now mail is silent again.
Any other ideas?

i have the same thing but the really strange thing is if you plug in your earphones to listen to audio or video you first hear the whoooosh sending sound for every email you've sent since the last time you plugged in the headphones. weird...
is this what they mean by ghosts in the machine???
got the answer about other software: the was an update for HP Printer software. notification showed up in the Message Center; clicked & it went straight to the App Store>updates>clicked on install.

I have the same sound problem, and I forgot about the "woosh" issue I had last week until I read Mike's post; last week mail emitted a bunch of "woosh" (sending mail) sounds one after another. Probably about 8 or 10 times. I had no idea what was going on.
A few days later I noticed that I no longer got the "woosh" when I sent mail.
Something's wonky.
I'm having same problem. MBPro Retina, Mtn Lion, Mail stops making sounds after computer sleeps. Hafta quit and restart. I love Mail, and I really depend on those sounds.
Same problem here.
Turning off mail and on again helps (for a while).
More sounds tend to disappear ... emptying Trash / taking a screenshot ...
New OS update (Aug 23rd, or thereabouts) seems to have addressed this problem. My sounds have returned.
Still broken for me after the update. THe whole client has been ****** since ML got installed.
Messages displaying wrong and such.
It feels like MS Outlook now.
mine is doing it intermittently now.
on the other hand, the Safari problem of force reloading pages has started in the new Mountain Lion version!!!
do they do this on purpose?
i vote Apple uses the $1.05 billion from Samsung to fix Mail & Safari...

Have them fix all know bugs with it. ML is getting on my nerves about a lot of things that worked just fine in older Mac OS's.

Nice to know how to reset the audio driver.
All of the proposed solutions worked for a short period of time, none of the proposed solutions has worked over one or two overnight sleeps.
So, unless I stop and restart mail, I have no sounds.
We need a more complete solution!
