Is there a short cut to shut computer down?

When I want to shut down, that's what I want. Is there a short cut for that instead of mouse over to the Apple icon, click Sign Out, then another window popup and I have click one more time. Is there any faster way?

Not to safely shut down, no. You can press and hold the power button in an emergency (if the mouse or menus are not responding).

The shutdown process has to close out caches, clear temp files, write any cached data to disk, and a number of specific steps to ensure your system goes down cleanly and will thus boot back up properly as well. Bypassing the normal shutdown procedure will lead to problems, potentially catastrophic ones, eventually, as anyone who has just yanked the cord out can likely attest to.

There should be no need to select a screen button with the trackpad, because Shutdown is already highlighted.

I'll give that a try. I just hate to mouse over to the Apple logo, click, scroll down and click sign out, then a popup window comes up, mouse over to the option to shut down, then click that option, then click okay for the last step to shut it down.

I need a faster (short cut key -- perhaps) that will bypass most these steps above but still shuts down properly.

Just as an aside, you could do like many of us do and just not shut down. Since at least my toilet seat iBook circa 10 years ago, I generally only shut down my Apple computers when not using them for long periods. Otherwise, they are just on 24/7 and I sleep them instead of shutting down - makes it much faster to come and go from sessions at the computer.
