Settings-display-toward the bottom will be an airplay menu.
I have the "show mirroring options in the menu bar when available" checked but there is nothing. Do i have to purchase the apple TV for it to mirror?
You need AppleTV.
alrighy thanks, i thought so.

Yep, & a MacBook Pro that supports such: 2011 Models or later, only.
I have a similar problem. Macook Pro early 2011 and ATV 3rd Gen. Checked Sys Preference - Display and ticked show airplay when available and have no devices detected. Any thoughts?
Thanks

This, from SeaBeast, got me working.
If your iMac is compatible and that there is an AppleTV on your network, an AirPlay icon will appear on your MenuBar, beside the clock. There you simply have to select your AppleTV.

Depending on the model of your Mac and your TV, there will probably be adapters and cables available to get the TV to act as a second screen on your computer, including optional mirroring (not through AirPlay).
