Q: OS X Mountain Lion only boots in safe mode!

My MBP had OS X Lion on it and yesterday when OS X Mountain Lion came out I bought it. I downloaded it and installed it. When the computer was booting up after installation the computer kept restarting again and again and was not ready to come to the login screen. I held down the power button and turned it off. I turned it on again and it still didn't work. I held down the shift key while turning on and it did boot in safe mode on Mountain Lion! I tried checking lots of stuff on the internet and nothing worked. Multibeast was not ready to install, I resetted the PRAM, downloaded VooDoo Loader, changed the com.apple.Boot.plist file, and it still didn't work! I don't know what to do now. Also I tried holding down option key while startup and I select Macintosh HD and still doesn't work. Turned on safe mode again and tried changing startup disk and says "Building boot caches on boot partition failed." Can somebody please help me?

Okay thesmokemonster I did not reinstall yet but right now I tried booting it up (not through safe mode) and it asked me for the password like last time. I typed it in like last time. Then everything loaded not like last time. All the folders, dock, and status bar loaded. And then after about a minute, the computer froze and it started beeping again. I read on internet that beeping means that the RAM went bad, or the computer does not support two pieces of RAM at the same time and supports only one. I have two in my computer. Maybe this might help. My computer came with 4GB of RAM. I upgraded it to 8GB of RAM which I bought from Fry's at a deal price. I checked to make sure it was the same type of RAM I wanted. Same type and voltage. Do you think that RAM went bad?

But does that have anything to do with the Mac freezing up?

You should make an appointment with an apple genius to see what is going on. But if you dont want to o that, these are some of the initial steps I would take given what you have told me. (reinstall OSX!)

Check to make sure your ram is actually compatible.

Ok I will reinstall OS X, but will the Genius Bar help me if it doesn't work? My warranty expired 2 weeks ago.

Honestly it never hurts to ask. Especially with apple's customer service policy (I usually leave thinking that I won ). However if it is based on your RAM that you got, they might tell you that the RAM is in fact an issue but they never would cover it since you didn't get it from them...

But ask, and give a pouty face they may take pity. I'm being very serious with this suggestion.

Man, do you have Sophos antivirus? If that so, you need to uninstall it the right way:

    1. For Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac OS X version 7.x , go to Macintosh HD|Library|Sophos Anti-Virus.
    2. Select 'Remove Sophos Anti-Virus.pkg'.
    3. Follow the instructions on the screen.

NOTE, if you are running Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac OS X version 4.x, the path in step 1 is Macintosh HD|Library|Application Support|Sophos Anti-Virus.

It seems that Sophos antivirus is crashing ML. They have an update but I'll wait some time becuase I've really had a painful time these days.

Can I just ask what hard drive you have in your machine?

I have an OCZ Petrol SSD in my Mac Pro and after upgrading to Mountain Lion, I can no longer boot into OS X and the machine stays in a continuious boot loop.

This is a recognised problem with some SSDs and Mountain Lion and currently we're waiting for a fix.

The hard drive is the one which came with the computer when I bought it brand new from best buy.

ok thesmokemonster I reinstalled OS X and it still makes that beeping sound after logging in. I think it is because I installed MultiBeast. I am trying to uninstall that now. Keeping you updated.

Exact same here. No reported hard drive problems. It will not accept anything beyond 10.7.4. 10.7.5 does the same restart boot fail thing. (though I don't get any beeping)

I can only start up in Safe Boot. (the interna startup drive is a Crucial 128GB SSD and the User folder is on a WD 1GB drive in the Optical Bay.

Curiously though I too upgraded from 4 to 8GB (OWC) RAM.

And I tried updating an external drive to ML with the same results.
