can I upgrade to a 64-bit kernel

I'm trying to load the new Avid Symphony on to my computer and it told me that I'm not runnng a 64-bit kernel system to install the software. What does this mean and how do I upgrade my kernels.

Thanks,

Beau

Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion

  1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
  2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
  3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
  4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
  5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
  6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
  7. Xserve (Early 2009)

If you have one of the above models then you can boot the 64-bit kernel. Some of these models do not boot the 64-bit kernel by default. To do so you must restart the computer and immediately after the chime press and hold the "6" and "4" keys together until the spinning gear appears. You can also use a third-party tool such as 32- or 64-bit Kernel Startup Mode Selector 1.6.
