I am gutted, just upgraded to Mountain Lion to find that I cant use half the features as my Macbook Pro is a Mid 2010 model and so the features that I really needed like Mirroring are not supported.

WHY? THIS IS DREADFUL!!!!

I am a great Apple fan and have spent a small fortune on Apple Products. This is really bad Apple and I dont understand why!!

A VERY ANNOYED APPLE USER.

BUYER AND UPGRADER BEWARE!!!

Yes, not as well publicised as you'd have liked and has caught out many people.

There is a 3rd party alternative called Airparrot you may want to try.

The best theory for not supporting it I've come across is that it relies on CPU based h264 encoding:

Older Macs and some current ones won't have this.

The frustration is that Apple could have opted for a software solution but warned performance might not be as good and let the user decide if it's good enough for them or not.
