The iMac CPU fan going ape **** after upgrade
Just installed Mountain Lion - result: CPU fan is at 3000 RPM constantly. CPU temperature 50 celcuis, GPU around 70. Nothing serious is running - just Safari iTunes and Mail.
Any suggesions?

Try a PRAM and SMC reset, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 and http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
Tried - doeesn't help.
A reinstall is probably in order. At least in my experience, this usually means that the fan control kernel extension failed to load for some reason. Eventually, the hardware gives up waiting for the OS to tell it what to do, and assumes that the OS is probably hung, so it ramps up the fans to maximum speed out of a sense of self-preservation. 🙂
Reinstalled - the issue is NOT resolved. I assume this a pretty annying Mountain Lion bug that needs fixing asap. It's pretty annying.
Hmm. Are there any errors in /var/log/kernel.log that sound like they might have something to do with fan control?
weird,,, i got a software update that says it fixes "cpu consumption".. but i dont have mountain lion installed yet.
Nothing no 😟
CPU comsumption - well it isn't really under heavy load, nor is it particularly hot. It's just the fan that spins like crazy for no obvious reason.
Apparently it has to do with indexing via spotlight?
Anyone's fan STOPPED after a few hours of installing?
I did a fresh install - indexing took less then a minute. It has nothing to do with that.
hmm, i will probably hold off installing for now.. keep us updated if/when it stops =/
If you're running ESET Cybersecurity you may need to upgrade. Older versions have been causing a crash in the Launch files which means reportcrash constantly triggers (drains battery and kicks in the fans).
Here's the fix...
First, check you've got a problem with crashreport (run Activity Monitor and select 'All processes'). If crashreport is at the top of the list with 100+ % CPU time and you have ESET then it's possibly this issue.
Go to Eset website and download the latest version of Cybersecurity and run the dmg file once downloaded. Click the 'uninstall' button to remove and you should (hopefully, as I did) see the crashreport stop. You can then reinstall ESET (I have done with the newer version with no problem).
I'm not sure if a straight install over the top (upgrade) will work - easy to uninstall and reinstall in a few mins anyway.
I hope this helps a lot of people out!
just installed.. fan has been on, and barley any programs installed (cpu mostly idle)... please apple, make a patch =(.
In my case, I seem to have the problem solved by going to Apps->Utilities->Activity Monitor, then killing the Roboform process that was using 70%+ of the CPU, but only less than 100mb of memory.
Apps->Utilities->Console was also showing a few errors per second for this software (Roboform).
