Q: Any suggestions for Migration from Leopard to Lion via Ethernet?

I have tried several times using Ethernet and direct connections to use the migration assistant to move over my appications (and more). I get almost to the end and then about 2 minutes before I get to the end it stalls, then the time goes up! It never finishes.

I have been on the telephone twice with Apple Support and the first time I tried it was wifi. Now I'm using Ethernet and it won't finish. I am simply trying to migrate over my applications folder and settings. Any suggestions? Other than taking both computers into the store and then having to wait 48 hours or more. I did update my software on the Lion MacBook Pro and also downloaded a patch to my Leopard to help with known glitches on my 10.5.8 OS.

I'm at my wits end. Thanks in advance.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

you could try taking the drive out of the old system and connect it to the new system with a SATA to USB adapter and tying the migration that way. It certainly would be faster then Ethernet.

But if there is some corruption on the olfd drive that may fail also. But then since the drive is phyically connected to the new Mac you could just copy and paste you data over. Not sure about the programs. But if you have older PPC program they won't run on Lion because Lion does not support those older apps, No Rosetta in Lion.

Good luck and hope you get it to work.

Does this mean I should uninstall Rosetta Stone from my Leopard (old) MacBook Pro before I do the migration? I'm thinking after your comments that this may have been the issue all along and the migration is working fine, but Lion won't allow Rosetta to migrate. If this is the case (and I look forward to your answer), then THANK YOU.

No that wouldn't work. Lion simply does not support the use of older PowerPC applications (PowerPC being the older type CPU (Processor) that Apple used before they switched to Intel CPUs).

You will need to find newer programs, or updates to your older programs, that are designed to work with Intel based Mac's.

I've had one instance of Migration Assistant getting to a certain point and then just stopping. This was years ago, using MA from a PowerBook G4 to my 'new' 2006 MBP. I just canceled it and then found that everything had migrated successfully - just some sort of bug in MA where the app didn't register that the process was complete.

MA isn't perfect but 99.9% of the time it works. It should not be OS dependant - migrating from one OS to another shouldn't be a problem at all.

Call back and let us know your status.
