I am going into my external HD, a Western Digital My Book Pro Edition 250 gB model to see the backups there, I click on the file where they are supposed to be and there is no content.

I have tried to update TM to see if that solves the problem so as to be able to backup and get the error window saying need at least OS 10.5 , I have 10.5.8 so I do not understand ? I do not have Time Capsule.

Is there a way to reinstall TM from scratch ? and start over, my info says it is supposed to be version 1.0, but it will not back up, seems to just try but not succede ?

Thanks for the help

How are you "going into" the drive? Via the Finder? If so, that's not recommended. Try the TM browser.

What are you trying to update? If you're on 10.5.8, that's the last version of Leopard.

Most of Time Machine (the part that actually does the backups), is part of OSX. The actual Time Machine application is separate. And you can't update it separately.

Does it send any error messages? If so, what (a screenshot would be fine).

If not, do you mean it hangs? If so, what's shown on the TM Preferences window when it does?

That sounds like the backups may be damaged. See if you can repair them, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting

what exactly is the process from seeing the TM folder on your desktop to going to the backups and getting into them ?

Use the Time Machine browser (the "Star Wars" display). With a Finder window open to, say, your home folder, just click the TM icon in your Dock, or click the one in your menubar and select Enter Time Machine.

You might want to review the Time Machine Tutorial, and perhaps browse Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions, especially #15A and 15.
