Mountain lion has killed my mac book pro. After downloading and trying to install, I am stuck in a loop of "not enough room to install on this disk" and not being able to access the old disk's data to open up space.

hold down the option key as your mac starts up, you should see a choice of which drive to start up from. Try choosing your old Lion system (I'm assuming the new installation hasn't worked so the old OS will still be there), and see if that works to get you out of the loop.
Nope. It just opened the installer and stayed in the same loop.
It tells me to choose a startup disk but the only option is the HD which it will not use because it says it cannot gather enough information.
Eveything was working fine until the mountain lion failed install.
Im having the same problem, can't even restore from time machine. Also gives me no obvious way of making space on the hard drive so i can get out of this cycle death, I now have a very expernsive paper weight.
Not even Lion Recovery?
I'm currently attempting to boot my mac in to safe mode to see it can the provide me with a way out. It appeats to be doing something all be it very slowly. I'll let you know how that goes.

Safe mode seems to get you out of the loop and back in the game. hold down shift when you start your mac until the grey screen with applce logo appears, then just wait
Starting in safe mode restored the OS. Thanks for the advice. Now I will look at what I need to do to get Mountain Lion installed. Apple support is supposed to call me in a half hour. If they have anything meaningful to say, I will pass it on.
Right, I've had the same problems, managed to use the safe mode to delete plenty of files, the computer now won't let me install mountain lion on to my Macintosh HD. Has this happened to anyone else? Not sure where to go from here...
