customise my folder icons in Mountain Lion

hi guys !

in what seems to be a trend started in Lion, after installing Mountain Lion some of my system folder icons retained my custom icons, others didn't !?

CandyBar won't work, changing them one by one works with SOME but not all ( what's THAT all about ??.. ) & Mountain Lion tweaks apparently is still not ready

also my Finder sidebar - which i went to great lengths in Lion to have in color... - is back to dull, detestable & boring, ''it all looks the same'' grey :

call me crazy but i DO indentify stuff by color & shape MUCH FASTER rather than by text or position !

does anyone need to actually read the word ''Stop'' in a traffic stop sign to positively & unequivocally identify it ? i would think that catching a glimpse of it's shape & color does it for most people - & THAT'S what i call REALLY simplyfying people's lifes !

moving on...

has anyone PLEASE figured out how to get around whatever ''clever'' obstacle implemented - i can only guess deliberately... - to stop users customize their computer to suit their preference/needs ?

i know i sound sour over what seems like a small, petty little annoyance in what is otherwise a GREAT OS but it TRULY strikes me as plain old contradictory ( to refrain qualifying it otherwise.. ) to waste resources doing something apparently SO useless or is there actually a reason for it but no one can be bothered inform/explain ?....

if grey is SO brilliant, maybe we should just start using grey traffic lights ? after all if color ISN'T important & position says it all.....

any suggestions will be greatly appreciated, many thanks

Hi Kappy

thanks, that's really helpful & generous of you !

so who should i contact at Apple to make it possible to change icons in the traditional Apple way - right click get info>select icon>paste whatever icon was copied

any insight on that ? i mean even in Lion it worked so obviously no need to downgrade to Leopard....

Hi Nuno1959,

I'm with you on the frustration of losing all your customised Icons. I had also used Candybar to change as many of the icons as I could, and now am back to the boring old MAC icons with Mountain Lion. I emailed Candybar and they said that Mountain Lion didnt support their jproduct and they had no informatoin as to when it might. It may be a small thing to some but it is driving me crazy and for a few extra functions I'm considerign downgrading back to Lion until I can change my icons once again.

I had also used Lion Tweaks to change the revolting leather look in Calendar and Address Book, and this also does not work with Mountain Lion. It says it supports ML OS but it doesn't it is so FRUSTRATING!!

Anyway, I noticed that Tuttle above recomended SideEffects to change your Finder side bar to colour. Please be careful with this. I installed this on my Macbook Air yesterday and it crashed my Finder, and I could not open it at all and had no way of opening files. I had to use MacKeeper to uninstall SideEffects and reboot my Air before Finder would open again.

Let's hope the app guys get up to speed soon or I'll be going back to Lion.

Hi anjikn

i hear you my friend, i hear you....

it's not that i question the IMMENSE technical capabilities of the people at Apple - reason why i buy & use Macs.. - BUT i have this primitive tendency to believe Mother Nature ( to me the MOST EFFICIENT resources user EVER... ) has got A FEW things FULLY SORTED to start with & DOESN'T need human meddling to improve things since there's NOTHING to improve upon...

in my opinion, color as an identifying aid is DEFINITELY one of them ! but when i commented on the exact same thing in Lion, i've realized this concept IS hard for some to wrap their minds around, go figure...

i HAVE tried SideEffects & basically nothing happened, neither good nor bad ! so i just uninstalled it & that was that..

i won't bother going back to Lion because ever since i 1st laid hands on M.Lion i DO LIKE the way it ''flows'' & i know it's only a matter of time before someone comes along & delivers....

personally i would rather Apple do it but if it's somebody else what's the problem ? at the end of the day whoever delivers what i need is the one who gets my money...

meanwhile if i find something relevant i'll post back here

cheers

hi guys

guess what ? stuborn as i am & after reading so many people praising the virtues of SideEffects, i downloaded it again, re-installed &.....VOILÁ ! no more dreary, dictatorial ''soviet institutional'' grey in my Finder Sidebar ! ;-)

don't ask me what did i do different this time, as far as i can tell i did the exact same, fact is it works fine now

iTunes being grey doesn't upset me so much since i SIMPLIFIED it as much as possible ( alphabetical ''genre'' playlists where A is Alternative, B is Blues, C classical, etc..) plus the fact i'm TERRIFIED to mess with it & have it go nuts on me

however i would LOVE to get my Apple Mail sidebar icons & folders in color as i used to have them - call me crazy but to me color icons are EXACTLY like traffic lights :

red = stop & green = go, IMPOSSIBLE to mix THAT up - someone could shuffle them 3 times a day & i still WOULDN'T confound them

cheers

Hi Guys

Tuttle :

thanks for suggesting SideEffects but somewhow i couldn't mark that answer as the one that solved this so....i marked the your next which doesn't make much sense but, there you go ! ;-)

anjikn :

good to know, i was fiddling away with it the other day & the ''Apply Icons'' kept being GREYED OUT as if it was a big conspiracy to drive me NUTS !! now it's there & guess what ? grey icons & folders out the window & let the fresh air in !! DONE ! thanks for pointing it out !

no one has any suggestions about Mail ? maybe i'll post it under another header....

cheers guys !

Were you able to change system icons, like Finder or Trash? I changed both app icons and system icons in CandyBar, and it let's me click "Apply Icons" but then on the dock, only the app icons actually change. The Finder and Trash icons aren't changed in the dock (even though they're changed within CandyBar). Anyone have the solution to this?

Also, does anyone know how to change individual folder icons so that it shows up on the dock? I know about the "Get Info" window, and pasting the new icon at the top, etc. but this does not get reflected on the dock (on the dock it still shows the folder's contents "stacked" and superimposed on each other).

Thanks!

Hi.

So right-click on the Dock icon (stack) and select "Display as Folder".
