I had this problem after my iMAC 27" 2010 was updated to ML. My Apple TVs 3rd Gen would see the home sharing iTunes library for a while, but if the computer was asleep it would NOT see it.

My short term work around has been to go into settings>Computers>Turn Off Home Sharing... and then turning it back on. All of a sudden my Computer "button" on the ATV3 would show my library information from my iTunes/iMAC.

All of a sudden today this measure was not working. So I turned off home sharing and back on on my iTunes/iMAC. Now, I dont even see Music, TV Shows, Movie lists on my ATV3. (Before the error was when I tried to open the TV Shows I would get error "There are no TV shows....") Instead the current error is could not connect to iTunes library.

I am going to try a reboot of the iMac, ATV3, and Home Network to see if that resolves anything. But this is definitely wonky. I am going to also try signing out and back in on the ATV with the Store ID.

Funny enough, My iPhone and iPad can connect and control the ATV3's via the "Remote" app. So that requires home sharing to be working properly on the ATV. So it has to be something with the iTunes library and ML.

After working through several procedures with Apple Support on the phone, we established that Home Sharing is also not working with the iPad3, not just ATV2. We tried rebooting everything and even setting up a new user account on the computer. Nothing worked.

I also noticed that when Home Sharing is turned off in iTunes, 'SHARED Home Sharing' does not appear in the left hand menu. Going to Advanced > Turn On Home Sharing makes it appear there BUT as soon as I enter my username, password and click on Done after it appears, the 'SHARED Home Sharing' section disappears again, although Home Sharing is now On in the Advanced menu.

Definitely a problem with iTunes and/or Mountain Lion as I didn't have any problems before now. I am hoping that Apple Support can get back to me with a solution.

I have the same problem identified by sharpie above. It used to work in snow leopard. But lion broke it, and mountain lion is no better. To those patently awaiting a fix: don't hold your breath. I have a mid 2010 iMac running ML. I've tried absolutely everything to get this working (Ethernet vs wifi, using arcane 'darkwake' terminal commands etc)

Once my mac has been asleep for more than a few minutes, none of my iOS devices can access the home share to stream material.

Really frustrating: possibly the single most useful function in iTunes has been broken for about a year.

After following advice from Apple Support, my problem has been resolved by buying a router.

To function correctly, the home sharing feature requires that both the home sharing computer and the ATV be connected to the same network. If the iMac is acting as a router (as mine was), it isn't actually on the network but is the one supplying the network. That did work in Lion but apparently not in ML.

I am using a wireless internet USB dongle, so I bought a 3rd party wireless router that was compatible with it. That way the Mac and the Apple TV are connected to the same network, therefore fulfilling the system requirements as described in the article below:

This has worked for me, including when the computer is asleep. The bonus is that AirPlay also now works for me.

SHARING still disappears from the iTunes sidebar once Done is clicked on after turning on Home Sharing, but that doesn't seem to be a problem.

Glad it's working for you. I think the general consensus is the Mac is on the same network as the ATV and the other devices. Here's an update on my situation. For whatever reason, I decided to delete my library out of iTunes and re-add it back. The funny thing is, if I go to Movies in my iTunes bar, there are no movies displayed. I get that generic message of adding movies to that section as if it was empty. However, if I go to my shared library on my iPhone or iPad, they all appear. So basically, it still doesn't work correctly. I have since decided to give up on iTunes home sharing. I bought a new LG Smart TV which has Plex Media Center built in and have to say it works 100% better than home sharing. Granted it still has its shortcomings (can't view my forces subtitles which are burned in the movie files) but I'm still working through that. At least now I can watch my media. There is a change I made to the energy saver settings on my Mac.. I am forcing the Mac to stay awake at all times. The display will shut off after a few minutes, but the Mac won't go to sleep. This is the only way I can watch on Plex from my tv without having to manually wake up the server. It's been working for weeks now. The energy consumed while idle is still less than 100w I believe. I think I can live with that. If I could jailbreak my ATV3, I'd be installing Plex on it in a heartbeat. There is a Plex app available on the App Store for iOS devices for $4.99. Let me just say it works fantastic. The GUI is exponentially better than Apple's home sharing descriptions. In fact, you can sync up with iPhoto and iTunes. So all my pictures that are already loaded in iPhoto automatically appeared in my Plex app on my TV and iDevices. Didn't mean to hijack the thread about using Plex, but something you guys might want to check out until these issues are fixed.

My home sharing is dead too since the update...

I've been talking with the support and had one thing left to do: Reset the computer (which i didn't do).

This is what i've done to get it working (without result):

1. Reinstall Mountain lion from time capsule.

2. Replace iTunes 10.6.3 with 10.5.3

3. Updating everything and resetting my devices to factory settings.

4. Removing accounts and trying with other apple id.

5. And A LOT more

home sharing does not work with new mountain lion update.
