Q: My ipod Classic 160 GB stops syncing after 30 something GBs

I have over 120 GB of music in my itunes. I have tried everything: Syncing entire music library, syncing half of it, then syncing in batches of 10GB. I always have the same problem at around 32 or 33 GBs it gives me an error message sayin smething like: cannot sync song "Whatever" error (50).

I have restored ipod many times, formatted it through windows used different usb ports, read every post on this and other sites. It is always the same it won't sync more than 30something GBs!!!

Hey I've had my iPod for a good 7 months and these are my results:

    Retracts: 5

    Reallocs: 10512

    Pending Sectors: 656

    PowerOn Hours: 118

    Start/Stops: 14019

    Temp: Current 33C

    Temp: Min 9C

    Temp: Max 53C

Is this really bad and what do I have to do about this?

If you bought it new and haven't been mistreating it then ask Apple to replace it under the warranty. The drive should not be in this condition so soon.

    Hey,

Haven't had synced the iPod for 3 months, I bought some new CDs I wanted to put on it when I noticed that it took about 1 hour to just sync an album (after the first approx 1500 songs went through smoothly), so I googled this issue and come across this thread.

Here are my stats; I'm not quite sure how hopeless it is as this device isn't even 6 months old...

    Retracts: 2

    Reallocs: 9328

    Pending Sectors: 0

    PowerOn Hours: 33

    Start/Stops: 6391

    Temp Current 38C

    Temp Min 10C

    Temp Max 54C

It probably got toasted a bit when I fell asleep on the **** ScotRail train without conditioning and the sun shining through the window last week... As it was running fine all the time, I don't hope that it's a progressive failure of the HDD. If it were, should I go to the Apple Store and replace it? It should be within the warranty, shouldn't it?

Reallocs is a little high but none pending may mean that the damaged areas are mapped out. You'd only know for certain by filling up the drive and checking the stats again. I suspect letting it get too hot won't have helped, but I don't know if that is high enough to be the cause of problems, or another symptom when the drive becomes unreliable.

I left it alone syncing for the last 4 hours and it turned out fine. I don't know exactly by what time it finished as I just arrived home but you saying it's alright reassures me, cheers! Filling it up would be a problem, probably, as I don't have as much music. an interesting option as I can use my iPod as harddrive, too.

Anyways, thanks mate for your help. Guess I just paniced a bit.

None pending suggests that any problem sectors on the device have been identified and mapped out. Might be worth checking the source drive for errors and trying an alternate cable. Could also be worth using the staged transfer method in Corrupt iPod classic.

Does this mean the drive is failing? Whenever I try and sync music, it freezes and will not allow my to continue to sync. I have restored, rebooted, ran anti-virus, malware, etc. All the music on my computer are from iTune purchases and personal cd's. Based on the high number of reallocs, does this mean the hard drive is failing? Is it time to invest in a new iPod?

    oDear tt2,

    I really need your help..

My Classic iPod 120 GB suddenly got hang when playing a song, then I tried to restart it with pressing SELECT+MENU together as usual. After that, all songs were not detected on my iPod, but when I checked the size on the Setting>About, all songs were marked as Other, not as Audio.

After that, I want to format+restore my iPod on my PC, but when the Format got started, my PC suddenly hang (this was because there's a problem on my PC's HDD, but now thanks God it's already been settled). When I tried to format it once again, it got stuck for very long time just when I right-clicked the iPod on "My Computer", and when I checked checked the size on the Setting>About, it mentioned 0 KB free and 0 kb Used . When I tried to opened in iTunes, it did not detected and iTunes got hang, even after I re-installed it and use the newest version.

I already tried to enter the Diagnostic Boot Mode, but it stopped on [Device Opened] and shows word Error on it. The only option was pressing Menu to continue.

Is there anyway to save my iPod???

    Thank you for the attention,

    Rio

I really don't think there is much hope, though you could try spanking it as a last resort.
