Q: My iMac would not reboot following a forced quit. Any suggestions

Hello, my iMac would not reboot following a forced quit the previous evening.  I had to forced quit because the security pane in the system preference did not respond to command to quit. Prior to that I installed Carbon Copy to back up some personal data to hard disc and while doing that I accidentally hit the security button.  Any comments or suggestions, please.

    SMC RESET

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

    • Shut down the computer.
    • Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    • Wait 15 seconds.
    • Attach the computers power cable.
    • Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.

    • The 5 second timing is important to a successful reset.

    PRAM RESET

    Zap the PRAM

    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    • Release the keys.

If you are still running 10.6.6 I would recommend updating to 10.6.8

Thank you very much for your response. I have tried both resets, but problem remains.

    Any further suggestions, please.

Are you getting ANY indications when you push the power button? Are all your power cords properly plugged and is the circuit you are in live?

    Hi,

Thank you very much. Yes the power is on and there was a chime before Apple logo appears. Seconds later grey spinning wheel appears and continue to spin.  Nothing else follows.
