Make sure you have done this to Reset the shuffle

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1655

If that does not help, I would do a Restore in iTunes.  Select the shuffle in the iTunes sidebar, under DEVICES.  Over to the right, on the Summary tab, there is a button for Restore.  This will erase the shuffle, re-install the software, and set it to default settings.  I would then load a small number of songs to see if the problem still occurs.

If the problem still recurs after a Restore, you should contact Apple tech support.  You can use the Contact Us link at the bottom right corner of this window (use complimentary phone support during the first 90 days), or if there is an Apple Store nearby, you can make a reservation at the Genius Bar and take it there.  Either way, you can see about getting it replaced, if defective.

Thanks for the advice. However it was a user error. I wasn't completely plugging in my headphones or adapter jack. So although I could hear music the player wasn't recognizing it.

Strange that it would actually play for about 45 seconds before cutting off.  Seems like the shuffle would not play at all, if it did not see that the headphones were plugged in...

In any case, glad to hear it was something simple.  Thanks for reporting back with the outcome.  It will probably help someone else with the same question...
