Q: Backup disk not available in Time Machine with upgrade install of Mountain Lion

I just upgraded my 2010 Macbook Air to Mountain Lion and everything seems to be working well, except for my Time Capsule backups. Ever since the upgrade, I have had an exclamation mark in the toolbar where the icon for Time Machine sits with the sign "Backup Delayed." When I choose "Backup Now," I get the following message:

 

"Time Machine couldn't complete the back up to xxxxxxx. The backup disk is not available."

 

What is really odd, however, is when I actually go into Time Machine, my pre-Mountain Lion backups seem to be there, and I can mouse over the horizontal timeline with the old backups, though interestingly, they are all listed in a deep shade of purple, not the usual white. Still it seems that I can go back to an older date and see the contents of the drive at that time.

 

Im puzzled, because if the backup disk was simply not being recognized, then I would not have any history at all. (Incidentally, on the Time Machine toggle setup page, it lists 'Oldest backup: None' & 'Latest backup: None' which also doesnt square with the behavior actually in Time Machine.) In any case, the machine will not make any new backups and is stuck in this permanently delayed status for the last two days.

 

I would really appreciate any thoughts.....

Yep! Its backing up now! And it has appended it to my old backups - i can tell from the backup size. Hope this can help anyone else with the issue. If you are using a USB drive connected to the Airport Extreme, you can try using the steps above and insert the IP address of your airport extreme.

    Great suggestion - this solved my issue. Slightly annoying that the name of my capusle is now an IP address, but as long as it all works, I am happy.

    Cool! This works by using the IP! I ended up having to blow away my old sparsebundle but there ya go.

     

    But here's the rub, I was asked whether I wanted to Replace my original server name (bundle) with the new IP based one OR back up to both disks? I chose Replace the first time to make sure it worked and it did, I I now have a backup where I couldn't get one earlier since I upgraded to ML. The question is, can I now chose back up to both disks via the standard name and will the IP based bundle continue to work?

     

    I'm tempted to wait until Apple releases a fix for the mess they caused before trying that out.

     

    BTW, I'm not using a Time Capsule. This is for a TM backup to a USB drive connected to another Mac.

    Was having the same problem with my 2011 Air backing up to old TIme Capsule.  It seems to have started the process of backing up now and this is what I have done to get it there:

     

    A4 Full Reset of TIme Machine http://pondini.org/TM/A4.html

     

    followed by reselecting the time machine disk in system preferences (going into system preferences / TIme Machine, click "select disk," click on the time machine disk, click "remove", then select the time machine disk again and click ok).

    Ditto. Upgraded my summer-2011 MBA to Mountain Lion. Just purchased Apple's Time Capsule. Set up Time Machine, started the backup (with MBA plugged in and via wireless - no Ethernet plug of course), walked away and was going to let it backup for a couple of hours.

     

    Came back an hour later. Not backing up, backup disk not available, asks me to Join the wireless network, which it then does automatically, and then I have to start backup again.

     

    Maybe an issue with ML stopping WiFi on sleep, even while backing up to TM???

    I had same issues with a usb disc connected through an airport extreme.
    I could mount the old backups and disc is there. None of the workarounds helped.

     

    After renaming the airport, the disc is found again and backup works.

    I would add that once I got Time Machine to connect to the disk and start backing up, after 12 hours it had only backed up 6 Gb.  So I stopped the backup and repaired the backup disk image using disk utility and my new Thunderbolt-Ethernet adapter cable.  That took about 1.5 hours.  After that I repeated the steps I outlined before to connect to the backup disk.  The backup completed much faster and everything seems to be ok now.

    Thanks for the resolution on this issue. I'm new to Mac products with the new MBA and find it unbelievable everyone is so accepting of this work around versus expecting a fix from Apple. I thought these products "just work"?

    Ok, I had the same problem (backup disk not available) and I tried what was suggested on this post. Didn't work for me. So what I did is;

    True the Airport Utility I did an update of my Time Capsule (it was needed by the system). My time capsule software was not the latest one.

    That created a reset / restart of the time capsule.

    I went into time machine and just deleted the hard drive used by time machine.

    Turn off time machine.

    Waited few second.

    Turn time machine back on.

    Selected the time capsule which was still showing my backup previous ML.

    I push for a backup now and everything was working good.

     

    Since then everything is working

    Hi guys,

    I'm slightly confused as to what the

    afp://10.0.1.100/

    means

    I have the IP address but just the #'s and periods not really sure what the rest of this is though...

    Thanks and I really need an answer.
