Q: itouch powered off and needed to be charged.  when i connected the USB, it said it needed to be restored and isn't being recognized on iTunes

My 3G iTouch died and needed to be recharged.  When i connected it to the USB on my laptop, it said it neede to be restored and my iTunes doesn't recognize my ipod.  What do I do now?  How do i restart from my previous backup?  How can i get everything back?  Please Help!!
