Dictation doesn't work

Go to

 > System Preferences > Users & Groups | Login Items

Click on the item named 'Speech Startup' then click the minus '-' button directly below it.

Restart the mac and test Dictation.

Any improvment?

Did as told.. but still the same... it seems to wait for the dictation to finish..when i click done it wiggles.. wait some more time and blank..nothing happens..

i guess there is an issue here.

I am also in Dubai- perhaps ISP is blocking traffic? However it (dictation) does work on the same ISP with Iphone and ipad.

Same thing- Microphone logo pops up- it reacts on the speech- then just shakes and dissapears.

I tried both with internal microphone and headphones.

But it didn't work with another user i created.

Any other version why its not working?

Well i suppose the problem is not with the ISP but the applications in the macbook.

I just figured out that I use VM ware and run windows 7 on it which also has speech recognition s/w.... i strongly am of the impression that this is the cause of the problem for me.

when i log in as a different user it works for me as in that login VM ware with windows 7 is not activated.

softwater has been a terrific help and support in trying to resolve the issue for me.

I don't have VM ware installed. But i have splahtop that has soundflower to redirect microphone and speakers to IPAD.

However in sound setting for dictation i can select between soundflower and internal microphone. So it does record but it seems no responce from apple server is getting through.

Hmm...it doesn't work through vpn as well that bypass ISP blocks. So i guess issue is not with ISP blocking traffic.

Just an additional thought - are you telling Dictation that you're done by hitting the fn key?

Hit fn key twice

Start talking - try just one or two sentences

Hit fn key once

Does the text appear now?

reset the pram, clear you cache and test dictation

if it works in another account then that is a user specific issue.

lastly, it could be that voice recognition is being taken by the vmware and not shared i dont know. can you make sure that everything is quit before testing dictation?check activity monitor kill all activities frm vmware

thanks for the suggestion, all activities from vmware are removed ...but still the same when it comes to dictation in any applications. however when i use the speech feedback( used in desktop for speakable items) it works fine... again when i go back after some time to check in user & groups and log in items speech startup of windows is there.. when i delete it it works but only for speech feedback not for any application. looks like i need to format my drive and reload all files?

most definitely a program is clashing or not letting dictation run smoothly. Since a fresh new user works, you can do it the long way which is to start removing one file to another. It defintely is a 3rd party causing this issue and not the network

If dictation is priority for you then I suggest you format the drive and start reloading the necessary files.

yes of course i hit FN after i finish dictation and it sounds like message accepted (like on iphone) but then it just shakes mic logo and dissappears and no text appears.

i have no clue what can cause a conflict because my mac is almost clean and i never installed VM ware or something.

when i responded i was assuming the OP's setup and not yours, sorry about that.

for you I suggest that you create a new location under network preferences and put in google dns
