I had this problem too and yes, it was annoying. The issue is related to local database storage, the default limit is 5 MB. However many sites request more space than this (eg. 10 MB). A solution is to increase this default limit.

In Safari 5 there is a setting for it (database storage allowed before asking) under Preferences > Security. Unfortunately in Safari 6 this setting was removed from the Security tab. The good news is that it can still be set from the terminal. As I saw, most websites request maximum 10 MB of storage, so increasing the default 5 MB to ~10 seems to be good. Quit Safari, open Terminal and execute this command:

defaults write com.apple.Safari DefaultDatabaseQuota 11000000

You can verify if the setting has been applied:

defaults read com.apple.Safari DefaultDatabaseQuota

Hi You who brought light into the shade,

it seems to me that this problem mostly affects Hungarian users – like myself. Do you have any idea, why is this so? Maybe our Safari 6 localisation fails in a way?

Other question, if I don't want the cache to be increased to 10MB, is there a way to give a permanent "no" to the repeatedly appearing questions, instead of giving in and increase the default database size?

Thanks for your help, greetings

No, it's because of Adverticum. Their ad system requests 10 MB of storage. This is why you see it on many Hungarian sites.

I don't think there is a way to completely disable it and I don't suggest you to do that. Guess what happens if a site requests GBs of data and Safari allows it without asking you. I haven't seen the popup since I set the default quota to ~10 MB. 10 MB local storage is a lot, even 5 MB is (will be funny to read this sentence back five or ten years later). Adverticum requests 10 MB of data, but I checked, they only store some KBs (visitor information like hostname). It's very rare that a site needs more than 10 MB. Either the site is a special site, or the programmer failed his math exam.

Sorry, misread your question, so you want to deny these requests, not allow. The answer is actually the same, I don't think it's possible. I contacted Adverticum, suggesting them to decrease the storage request to 5 MB. So either allow sites to use 10 MB (click on allow or increase default quota), or wait a bit and see if Adverticum fixes it.

Hi,

Thx for the detailed answer. I think that even if Adverticum fixed the issue, Apple should offer an easy way for users to control what chache usage Safari allows for the visited sites.

This in particular would mean that you could set a maximum threshold – or even zero –, and requests for more space could automatically be denied. So one slider with the space and one checkbox with the "ignore requests for more storage" would do the job.

Anyways thx again for your help, best regards
