Q: Repairing Boot Camp after creating new partition

I'm running OS X 10.8 and Windows 7 x64 Pro.

After properly setting up Boot Camp to dual-boot Windows on my Mac mini, I decided to test whether or not it was true that creating another partition (a data partition for OS X) would interfere with Boot Camp.  Wikipedia claims it does interfere but without citing a source, whilst the Boot Camp documentation itself only specifies that the disk must be a single partition _prior_ to setup - there's no mention of whether the disk must be _kept_ that way afterwards.

I opened Disk Utility, reduced the size of my OS X parition from 420GB to 80GB, and created a new partition in the unallocated space.  Here's how it looks now:

/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/190/19047693-1.png

When I attempted to proceed with the process, I did receive a warning that doing this (and I quote), "may" cause problems with Boot Camp.  Seeing as it was inconclusive, I thought I'd give it a shot - nothing ventured…

Of course, it borked Boot Camp, otherwise I wouldn't be posting here.  Whilst OS X boots just fine, the Boot Camp partition now no longer shows up in the Startup Manager, though it does in the Startup Disk prefPane.  If I do attempt to boot into Boot Camp, I receive the following message on a black screen:

No bootable device --- insert boot disk and press any key

The advice given to someone who had this same problem was, "fix your damaged Boot Camp volume."  But I'm at a loss as to how to do that.

So, anyone know how to proceed now so that I can keep my partitions as is, whilst fully restoring normal Boot Camp functionality?

Have you installed the Apple Windows drivers? (Notice filesystem types are HFS. I also have an external Firewire encolsure with additional HFS file systems that you can see).

To start from scratch, delete the Windows 7 partition from Bootcamp Assistant, then recreate a new Window volume using Bootcamp Assistant also.

Adding a third partition will break Boot Camp. Delete it and use an external drive for data storage.

    I have your exact setup.

Just data should be in middle.

I have this setup since mid of 2011 and works perfect

    - Mac

    - Data

    - Windows

From what i understand, third partition can only be in middle, if i make it at end, my setup does not work.

So i made it in middle and i am doing great since then.

You should not. Post your diskutil list, gpt/gdisk and fdisk. You may also want to verify that your Recovery HD works correctly using CMD+R. Take a full backup of OSX and Bootcamp.

Hi. I upgraded to Mavericks, and it broke my BootCamp. I have been using FileVault2 and Mtn. Lion before the upgrade. I can see my Windows partition, and I can select it from Startup Manager, but I can't boot into it. Similarly, I can choose it in System Preferences>Startup Disk, but booting to it does not succeed.

OK but did you create a new partition right before the failure to boot Windows? If not it seems you have a sufficient different problem to warrant a new thread. So I'd post all this information in a new thread, but also be really clear what exactly was done in between Windows working and not working, and also when you say "doesn't succeed" state what does happen, i.e. exactly how does it fail.

And then also post the URL for the new thread as a reply to this one.

You have Bootcamp on a drive which is part of a Fusion Drive. Is this an Apple-supported or DIY Fusion drive?

Mavericks has a newer version of Bootcamp (5.1).

If the 28GB partition can be seen as bootable in System Preferences, do you see a blinking cursor in top left corner and does it just sit there after you select it and the Mac reboots?

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5446 and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5828 may be worth looking at.

What version of ML did you upgrade from, to Mavericks?

Please try sudo gpt -r -vv show /dev/rdisk0 .

Does your Bootcamp work? (the fourth partition, id '07').

Try option 2 for sudo gdisk /dev/disk0 .

You may end up using testdisk (http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk) and looking for partitions.

I'm confused by what you've posted. You have one fdisk command but you've posted two different MBRs. One MBR with all four entries full, and one MBR with only one entry. They have different values also. So I don't understand that and it seems something is missing possibly another disk.

The gpt command shows there's GPT corruption. There is no such thing, normally, as converting to GPT on a Mac. It's already GPT. But yours is corrupt and that does need to be fixed before you proceed.

The message "Warning: Devices opened with shared lock will not have their partition table automatically reloaded!" means you need to redo the command as:

    sudo gdisk /dev/rdisk0

(And some people have the reverse problem, where they get the warning with rdisk0, so they need to try with disk0.)
