Unless I'm doing it wrong, it seems like you lose a lot of functionality when swtiching to fullscreen mode, as opposed to every other app I've used so far in fullscreen on Lion (and now Mountain Lion). When in fullscreen, I can't access the top menu, I can't import photos, sync vaults, and so on.
Before I raise a feature enhancement to Apple, can I just check with you guys that I'm not missing something obvious?

No, the only thing that appears is a small list of aperture icons. The Apple menu bar does not appear at all, no matter what I do (unlike in, say, Safari, iTunes, Pages, Numbers, Keynote, Garageband, and so on).
In Aperture one can not access the menu bar while in full screen, only Aperture's toolbar, HUD and filmstrip. Yes this behavior is inconsistent with other Apple applications. It cripples functionality in full screen.
In addition to what's been posted -- which answers your Q: it does not work as expected and you are not missing anything -- here's a brief comment on Aperture and full-screen mode. In short: I like it a lot; I never use it.
